Description

The Zoological Society of London is seeking an intern to work on a database holding information on its conservation work around the world and other projects, assisting with data analysis and report production as well as data entry. The position holder will gain opportunities to learn about ZSL’s work and make contacts with a wide range of ZSL staff, and will also become familiar with the nuts and bolts of managing such projects at home and abroad. There will also be chances to learn about database structure and function.

The ZSL Projects Database (ZPD) facilitates cross-society sharing of project information and analysis of the overall data on e.g. funding applications, target species, and conservation activities. The ZPD is currently in MS Access and is in the process of transition to a web-based version to enable access for staff based overseas. This volunteer position will support this transition and assist with the production of reports on ZSL’s work from the data.

Main Responsibilities

  • Liaise with the Head of Regional Programmes and the Database Designer to ensure a smooth transition to the new, web-based version of the ZPD. This will involve cross-checking data between the two versions and trialing both data entry and data extraction procedures in the online version.
  • Liaise with all relevant staff to ensure that all project records in the database are complete and accurate, especially grant and other funding records.
  • Liaise with the Head of Regional Programmes and other relevant staff to produce reports and, time allowing, publications drawn from the data.

The successful candidate will be very well organised with a good eye for detail. Fluent spoken and written English is essential, as are well-developed computer skills and a good understanding of wildlife conservation issues and activities. Previous experience working with databases, and using MSAccess in particular, is highly desirable. Knowledge of web-based database design would also be an advantage.

The internship is ideally full time for six months with a start date as soon as possible. The role is based at ZSL’s offices in Regent’s Park, London and ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches (max £5/day).  Please note that there should be no expectation that any paid position will arise out of this internship.

To apply please send your CV and covering letter to hr@zsl.org.

Closing date for applications is Friday 23 November with interviews shortly afterwards. Start date will be as soon as possible.
