This project conducts research and monitoring programmes to build a body of knowledge about whale sharks, along with educational efforts targeted at young people and local fishermen, whose drift nets pose a danger to the large fish, as well as to sea turtles. It is looking for volunteers to assist with data collection and analysis (on the local whale shark population), assist guides on whale shark safaris, and assist with educational programmes in local schools and hotels.
The project runs year round but the whale shark season is from October to March, peaking around February and March. In the off season, the focus is on research, education and community projects. Activities such as safaris and mountain climbing are available and encouraged during days off.
The project costs £475 per month which includes training, whale shark safaris, education workshops and more.
