Title: Volunteer Vacations Trail Crew Leader / LNT Instructor

Summary Description:

Volunteer Vacation Teen Trail Crew Leader / LNT Instructor is a 4+-month, seasonal staff position, May 14– September 21, 2012, with the AMC’s White Mountain Trails Department. This staff Leader/Instructor lead AMC Adult Volunteer Vacations as well as AMC's Leave no Trace master Educator Courses for adults aged 18+ in the backcountry for up to five days at a time. This staff Leader will co-lead with a Volunteer Leader for all Adult Volunteer Vacations, or be paired with another LNT instructor from a partner organization to instruct LNT Master Educator Courses.

Throughout the season, this Leader/Instructor is expected to communicate leadership techniques and decision-making processes with their co-leader while leading groups of adults in the backcountry. When in the backcountry, this Leader/Instructor is expected to facilitate proper outdoor skills associated with low impact methods. Adult Volunteer Vacation Trail Crews are involved in a variety of projects maintaining hiking and skiing trails and backcountry facilities all within the White Mountains of New Hampshire and many locations in Maine. Adult Volunteer Vacation Trail Crews work together to teach volunteers trail maintenance skills, such as installing and cleaning waterbars, setting rock steps, building bog bridges and blazing and standardizing trails. This Leader/Instructor will emphasize safety and maintain a high level of morale and work standards.

This Leader/Instructor will also be responsible for co-instructing the AMC Leave No Trace Master Educator Courses. Paired with a co-instructor from AMC or another partner organization, they will run the 5-Day master Educator Courses in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. A Master Educator Course and additional LNT training will be provided if needed.

We look for independent and motivated individual with previous outdoor leadership experience, a background in Leave No Trace and/or trail work skills and techniques is also preferred. This Leader/Instructor is based at AMC Camp Dodge and work a schedule of five days on (Monday-Friday) and two days off (Saturday-Sunday), camping in the backcountry with their crews as needed. Hours are variable within the 40-50 hour workweek, some weekend work is required. This Leader/Instructor is responsible for participant supervision both in the backcountry and at Camp Dodge from Monday morning to Friday afternoon.  Work can be physically and mentally challenging but the rewards are often unforgettable. Food, tools, equipment, and leadership/trail work training are provided. The Volunteer Vacations Trail Crew Leader / LNT Instructor reports to the North Country Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and train up to ten adult participants each week in a volunteer trail crew or LNT Course

  • Manage trail work projects in the frontcountry as well as backcountry setting maintaining AMC trail work standards.

  • Communicate decisions and group management techniques with other Leaders.

  • Plan menus, order, and prepare meals for adult program participants.

  • Serve as the primary responder/coordinator in the event of a backcountry emergency.

  • Foster morale and ensure a positive experience for all participants.

  • Emphasize safety and low-impact methods in the backcountry.

  • Communicate regularly with Camp Dodge, Trails Program staff, and guests to obtain feedback and suggestions.
  • Assist with maintenance of trail tools and other field equipment as needed.

Qualifications

  • Ability to live and work in the backcountry for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to supervise adult participants in remote locations.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations under varying conditions.

  • Ability to remain focused and manage many tasks simultaneously.

  • Strong motivational and communicational skills.

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to carry heavy loads (80+ lbs.) for long distances.

  • Leadership experience.

  • Knowledge of White Mountains and AMC, desirable.

  • Knowledge of trail work, desirable.

  • LNT Master Educator certification or other LNT Training, desirable.

  • Experience or desire to work with youth.

  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR or Wilderness First Responder certification preferred.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license and clear driving record required (driving record check will be performed).

  • Clear criminal background check (performed by AMC Human Resources Dept.)

  • Commitment to backcountry resource protection and a passion for volunteerism.

  • The Appalachian Mountain Club has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons, or the elderly to have a criminal record check performed on their name.
