USGBC is currently seeking a dynamic manager to oversee much of the daily operations of the organization.

U.S. Green Building Council has quadrupled revenue since 2005 and anticipates ongoing growth based on global demand for its products and services. The combination of continuous improvement and demand creates a challenging and exciting environment that requires a keen ability to manage change and risk. USGBC’s departments are heavily interdependent, requiring a matrixed operating environment. Continuous improvement plus innovation generate a steady stream of projects, many of which intersect with multiple departments and rely on technology solutions. USGBC seeks an experienced, hands-on leader who can facilitate the successful implementation and execution of projects.

The Vice President of Operations will report to and work closely with the COO. The primary role of this individual will be facilitation of interdepartmental projects.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Generate ROI and risk analysis for projects in collaboration with project managers
  • Lead the process of prioritizing projects and tracking them from inception to completion
  • Develop, implement and integrate organizational processes and systems
  • Develop, embed and monitor feedback loops to drive continuous improvement and organizational learning
  • Lead selected cross-functional teams
  • Oversee customer service
  • Mentor and coach managers to enhance their skills in the area of project management and process improvement
  • In collaboration with the Vice President of Finance, track USGBC’s performance against the metrics associated with USGBC’s Strategic Plan and provide timely reports to senior management and the Board on those and other key performance metrics
  • Work collaboratively with senior management to address gaps, shortfalls and weaknesses that impede goal achievement
  • Provide direction and support with the expansion of the organization, especially as it relates to global markets.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Education:
    • BS in business required; MBA preferred.
    • Certificate program or similar supplemental course work in project/process management desired.
    Skills & Experience:
    • Minimum 15 years managing a high energy, well-educated workforce; strong focus on systems, processes and financial management
    • Large scale, enterprise-wide change management, preferably with a Fortune 1000 company
    • Ability to transfer skills and knowledge through teaching and mentoring
    • Demonstrated success building and managing cross-functional teams
    • Track record of successful implementation and execution of technology-dependent projects
    • Experience managing overseas expansion highly desirable
    • Solid financial skills; prior accountability and responsibility for major profit center(s) and/or department(s); ability to build a budget and support it.
    • Superior customer service focus and sensitivity
    • Excellent communication and analytical skills
    • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment; self-directed
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and “emotionally intelligent”
    • Strong computer skills, including fluency with MS Office Suite, Visio, etc.

Internship Opportunities

Advocacy and Policy Intern

USGBC is currently seeking an individual with an interest in green building, advocacy, and public policy to help advance USGBC’s policy agenda through an internship with the Advocacy & Policy department.

The Advocacy and Policy Intern will play a key role in supporting the department through public policy research and analysis, management of contact databases, and development of advocacy tools and resources. In addition to research and resource management, the Advocacy and Policy Intern will have an opportunity to participate in green building events in Washington, DC - including attending hearings on Capitol Hill - and to gain in-depth exposure to the green building movement.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain USGBC’s database of local advocacy contacts
  • Assist in the development of advocacy and marketing materials
  • Support the staffing of USGBC’s Government and Codes committees
  • Develop additional tools and resources for use by Advocacy staff and local chapter advocates
  • Conduct research and compile reports related to USGBC’s policy work

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Interest in and understanding of public policy processes
  • Strong writing, communications, and organization skills and an attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Familiarity with html code and html editing software preferred
