Description

The Climate Group is seeking a motivated and bright individual with excellent research, writing, and organizational skills to support the implementation of one of our flagship policy projects, the Industry Transition Platform. You will be working with state and regional governments from highly-industrialized regions to develop strategies to cut industry emissions. 

You will also work closely with the Under2 Coalition policy team, providing support to governments to share and adopt innovative energy and climate policy models with global counterparts.

About the role

The Under2 Senior Project Officer will report to the Under2 Project Manager as part of the UK Under2 Coalition team and policy team. You will also work with policy team staff in regional offices, The Climate Group Business Action team, state and regional governments, global stakeholders, and partners.

About the Under2 Coalition 

The Under2 Coalition is a global community of state and regional governments committed to ambitious climate action in line with the Paris Agreement.

The coalition brings together more than 220 governments who represent over 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy. These governments include signatories to the Under2 Memorandum of Understanding as well as national endorsers and other supporters. There are 112 individual states and regions who have signed the Under2 MOU and are currently active members of the Under2 Coalition.

Signatories commit to keeping global temperature rises to well below 2°C with efforts to reach 1.5°C. Nine states and regions in the coalition have committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

In their position between national and local governments, states and regions are uniquely placed to take innovative climate action and to influence others to do the same.

About The Industry Transition Platform

The Industry Transition Platform works with state and regional governments from highly-industrialized regions to develop strategies to cut industry emissions while supporting?growth, job creation, and prosperity.    

State and regional governments participating in the project work together?in groups to identify the key challenges they face in transitioning their industry to be low carbon. In addition to the peer learning element of the project, representatives from industry, system change experts, and researchers will provide participants with tailored technical support so that governments can develop impactful, innovative, and ambitious industry emission reduction strategies.   

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Work closely with the Project Manager to support the overall strategy and delivery of the Industry Transition Platform
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to support overall project management incl. administration, monitoring and evaluation as well as budget management
  • Conduct background research on energy and climate policies to input into the Industry Transition Platform, and lead the research, coordination, and drafting of best practice briefings and case studies.
  • Manage relationships with the participating state and regional governments to understand their interests and needs, and keep documents and information up to date
  • Lead on the logistical coordination of webinars and meetings for government practitioners and industry representatives, including technical organization, coordination of speakers, drafting session briefings and minutes. Work with the Project Manager on webinar content.
  • Work closely with the Communications Team to coordinate external communications on the project (such as updating the website and publishing briefings).
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to coordinate external inputs into the project from partners and consultants, e.g. publications, research papers, presentations during calls/events/workshops
  • Support the work of the wider Policy Action Team as necessary 
  • Support cross-team coordination with the Corporate Team to deliver the outputs of the Industry Transition Platform and wider Policy Action work as necessary

 

About you

This is an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious industry focused policy action project and to work with an expanding team to support wider action on climate change by sub-national governments.

Essential:

  • Understanding of and a commitment to the mission of The Climate Group 
  • Interest and understanding of decarbonisation issues facing industry 
  • Excellent analytical and research skills with demonstrable previous experience
  • Strong project management, administrative, and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to easily synthesize findings and ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within and across teams, with good people skills
  • Proactive and able to work independently
  • Self-starter, with ability to adapt to changing conditions/circumstances
  • Ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment

Desirable:

  • Experience of working internationally
  • Experience of managing relationships and working with governments
  • Experience of running webinars and/or workshops 
  • Knowledge of foreign languages (especially French and/or German)

 

Location

You will be based in our London head office, in County Hall, which is a five-minute walk from Waterloo station. Occasional international travel will be required. 

 

Terms & Conditions

This is a full-time post for a fixed term period until July 2021, with the potential to become a permanent role. The salary for this position is £29,000 per annum or more based on experience. 

In addition to the salary, the role holder will benefit from:
