A key requirement for understanding how flood risk may change in the future is to develop methods to cascade ensembles of rainfalls predicted by global circulation and numerical weather prediction models and quantify the resultant storm impacts. Current hydrologic and hydraulic methods rarely account for all the prediction uncertainties in this process and are often limited in terms of the spatial scale at which they can be applied at the higher resolutions needed for robust storm impact analysis.

As part of the £4 million UK Storm Risk Mitigation Programme (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/programmes/stormrisk/), the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK, is looking to appoint two highly skilled, well organized individuals to participate in a 3 year funded research program. Successful applicants will characterize how uncertainties in meteorological model output lead to uncertain predictions of storm impact and to develop new high resolution hydraulic models capable of making best use of the forthcoming next generation of high resolution GCM and NWP models.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an innovative and multidisciplinary wider NERC programme that will advance climate impact assessment by formally linking consortiums involving hydrologists and climate scientists. If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Further information can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/personnel/ftc/.

Please state clearly on your application form whether you wish to apply for Post A or Post B, or you wish to be considered for both positions.
