SUMMARY:  Woods Hole Research Center seeks applicants for a temporary research assistant position with a background in natural sciences, ecology, or fish biology to assist with data management and sample processing.  This position will involve data entry and verification of herring migration. Some opportunity for collaboration on other WHRC projects might also exist. The successful applicant must work well independently once trained, with limited supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Scanning data sheets
  • Entering data and quality assurance and quality control on prior data entries.
  • Possibly measuring larval fish from images using the software ImageJ.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Ecology, Biology or demonstrated experience.   Undergraduate students or senior high school students will be considered with appropriate laboratory experience.
  • Ability to work well independently and with limited supervision
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Basic proficiency with word processing, data management and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or equivalent programs) is required.
  • Must have own housing and transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in data entry using Excel or similar spreadsheet.
  • Coursework or equivalent experience in ecology or aquatic biology.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit and remain focused for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer screen.

Compensation: $14 per hour.  This position is not eligible for our benefits program.

Appointment: This temporary research assistant position starts immediately and is for approximately 3 weeks at full-time. We will consider a part-time appointment. The duration of assignment might be extended if research assistant works part-time, instead of full-time. Cannot be extended past July 30, 2019.

Desired Start Date: June 24, 2019, or upon hire.
