Main duties and responsibilities Developing relationships with high profile clients (whether corporates or governments) Identifying and researching relevant cleantech companies Investigating cleantech sectors in more detail to identify opportunity areas Working with clients on developing innovation strategies Working with clients to prioritise suitable commercial models for engaging with start-ups; from equity investment to consortium R&D projects Delivering insightful analysis of commercialisation barriers and advising clients on how they can be overcome Making sure that robust and efficient processes are used in the delivery of services to clients Providing commercialisation/incubation services to early stage businesses Mentoring start-up companies, including capturing outcomes, steering decision making, managing and approving change, reviewing deliverables Managing subcontractors that may be used to deliver work for clients or incubation services for start-ups Identifying new clients and business development opportunities Overseeing the work of technology commercialization analysts Supporting wider Carbon Trust activities Feed into Carbon Trust business development and commercial activities in terms of ideas generation and evaluation Be an active member of the Innovations Business area and support other functions across the organisation. Present at public events and to build/maintain relevant networks Key skills The role requires a sophisticated understanding of how the process of developing products or services that rely on distinctive technology generates business value. Ability to quickly develop an understanding of the scientific and engineering principles of a range of leading-edge low carbon technologies Ability to identify and articulate the commercial value propositions that these new technologies could offer Deep understanding of technology commercialisation and innovation processes Motivated self-starter who is comfortable talking to and collaborating with diverse stakeholders by identifying their requirements, building trust and sharing enthusiasm. Uses initiative to develop and secure support from informal internal and external networks. Impactful communication skills: able to write fluently and with grammatical accuracy; able to structure documents very clearly, so that key messages are communicated effectively and retained in the memory of readers; able to adapt messaging to audience both in design and in live oral response to audience feedback. Confident and effective public speaker. Ability to programme manage the development of investment strategies and intellectual property management strategies for commercially-focussed technology development projects Strong leadership skills: able to clearly lead important projects and rapidly establish confidence as the first port of call on those projects for internal and external stakeholders; able to pro-actively manage input and approvals from key stakeholders; able to independently develop plans and secure approval for project resources; and able to take responsibility for project contingencies and risks. Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders by building trust and sharing enthusiasm. Ability to develop and secure support from extensive informal internal and external networks Excellent project management skills and proven ability to prioritise time and deliver results; flexible approach to managing work and people Ability to work effectively in a team environment and on a standalone basis. Ability to develop good internal and external networks across early-stage, academic, corporate, investor, specialist service providers and public sector in order to ensure strong dealflow and access the best knowledge and expertise. Qualifications and experience A good degree (at least 2:1) from a leading university with a strong grounding in science, engineering or business Experience of commercialising the output of research and development activities, and/or a track record of the commercial development of technology-business(es), and/or financial investment into technology-business(es) Experience of leading/coordinating project teams Ability to work independently, and to travel abroad Ability to influence and make a strong and compelling case to senior stakeholders Experience of working in the low carbon / "cleantech" sector would be beneficial Business or technology consultancy experience would be beneficial |
