Technical Officer

World Land Trust (WLT) is at the forefront of international conservation efforts through our programme of land purchase and land acquisition in collaboration with our international partners, including the development of carbon and other payments for ecosystem services projects. WLT is now seeking a Technical Officer whose role will be to support our Conservation Programmes team in the expansion of our conservation work, primarily providing analytical support in the creation of new projects and monitoring of existing projects.

What you will doing

This is a new opportunity to help build on WLT’s ongoing achievements in implementing effective conservation projects around the world.  You will be working closely with other Conservation Programme team members to provide technical support for the establishment, development and monitoring of new and existing projects, including our Carbon Balanced and REDD+ projects. This role may include periods of travel (sometimes at short notice) and the need to work independently, including providing support and working in close collaboration with international partners and WLT colleagues.

Who we are looking for

An excellent knowledge and experience of fieldwork, spatial and ecological data analyses, monitoring and GIS will be essential for this role, and with preference for a candidate with experience in landscape and biodiversity conservation. You will have good communication skills and be able to translate technical reports and assessments to a wide range of audiences. You will be passionate about wildlife conservation, and committed to furthering the mission and ethos of WLT.  

Main duties and responsibilities

• Provide technical support to the design, analysis and monitoring of the organisation’s conservation projects, including involvement in WLT’s REDD+ and self-certified projects.
• Work with WLT’s partner organisations in the monitoring of existing and establishment of new projects including undertaking site visits where appropriate/necessary.
• Provide wider support to WLT’s conservation programmes as directed by the Director of Conservation.

Operational and line management

• This role will report to the Director of Conservation, but will also involve close liaison with other senior managers and staff within the organisation.

Person specifications

Formal qualifications

• Educated to a degree or higher degree level in a relevant subject area.

Experience and knowledge

• 3+ years of experience working in the conservation, environment and/or carbon sectors (essential).
• Excellent knowledge and experience in the analysis and use of mapping and statistical software (e.g. GIS and Program R) (essential).
• Knowledge and experience of relevant field techniques such as carbon, forestry and biodiversity monitoring (essential).
• Good knowledge of the establishment and design of long-term monitoring projects (desirable).
• Knowledge of carbon, REDD+ or other payment for ecosystem service (PES) sectors (desirable).
• Experience of working internationally in varied cultures and countries (desirable).

Abilities and skills

• Self-motivated and able to work collaboratively (essential).
• Ability to work and deliver under time constraints (essential).
• Culturally sensitive and able to work with a wide range of individuals (essential).
• Able to travel independently (sometimes at short notice) for periods of up to several weeks and able to work in remote areas in difficult field conditions (essential).
• Good communication skills including an ability to translate technical information to a diverse range of audiences and deliver training to partners (desirable).
• Able to work as part of small team (essential).
• Excellent written and spoken English (essential) and foreign language ability (desirable).

Location The role is based at the World Land Trust’s headquarters in Halesworth, Suffolk, UK.
