Role Profile

ZSL is seeking a highly credible and collaborative individual to be our new Sustainability Manager, who will provide operational support to develop, implement and manage ZSLs sustainability and carbon reduction plans. This is to ensure ZSL in both the UK (London and Whipsnade Zoo) and internationally (our 9 country offices across the globe) is compliant with relevant legislation and sustainability and energy use best practice. Reporting directly to the Principal Lead, Estates and Masterplanning (PLE&M) the successful candidate will lead the operation of ZSL’s Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring compliance and reaccreditation and deliver against action plan targets set within the EMS.

 

The Sustainability Manager will build strong relations nationally and internationally with staff and external stakeholders, supported by the PLE&M. This will include partnering with all parts of ZSL (Institute of Zoology, Conservation Programmes and Zoo’s) and providing technical support, environmental training, audit and reporting support. The Sustainability Manager will  attend external events representing ZSL (as and when needed), ensure our robust sustainability initiatives are successful and ensure our control measures are upheld across the society. The successful candidate will ideally possess excellent people and project-management skills, and be able to plan and keep track of multiple projects while constantly evaluating the business environment for opportunities and threats.

Person Specification

Ideally the successful candidate will have:

  • Associate membership of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) and has undertaken lead auditor training (Desirable).
  • Hold a professional qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or another related subject.
  • Hold a MSc qualification (or equivalent) in Environmental Management or have equivalent level of work experience.
  • Proven experience working with design and construction projects and will understand how to successfully implement sustainability into refurbishment and new build projects.
  • Strong project management and excellent interpersonal skills will be essential
  • Demonstrable experience of working on high quality sustainability plans in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of a broad range of environmental issues, standards, best practice, legislation and grants.
  • Extensive professional experience of sustainability issues in the private or public sector, as well as experience of the management of an EMS and undertaking audits.
  • A solution-focused approach and the ability to make objective decisions under pressure will make you a success in this role
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.

Please note: This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position reporting to the Principal Lead of Estates and Masterplanning. The post will be based at ZSL’s head office in Regents Park however, but will require the post holder to regularly  travel to Whipsnade Zoo and, occasionally, to our overseas offices. Having a "can do attitude", solution-focused approach and the ability to make objective decisions under pressure will make you a success in this role.
