ERM is seeking an energetic, self-starting Sustainability Consultant to join our consulting firm in Johannesburg, South Africa.

POSITION SUMMARY

To work with many of the largest multi national corporations in Africa and internationally who need to lift  their sustainabilty performance to meet or exceed global standards.

 RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • To develop and deliver some of the leading sustainabilty projects in our market such as; lifecycle management, intergrated water management, SD Transformation, sustainability assurance and ecosystem services valuation.
  • To provide guidance to clients in dealing with sustainability consultation and reporting - providing them with support in consulting and communicating with their key stakeholder groups in order to minimise risks and maintain effective relationships.
  • To contribute proactively and effectively to projects and developing ERM’s sustainability consulting and assurance service offerings – providing innovative ideas, managing client relationships, undertaking research, analysis and report-drafting, and conducting site visits
  • To manage projects in accordance with the requirements of ERM’s project management system, including work-planning, team briefing, budgeting and progress, project and financial monitoring in order to ensure that all projects are delivered to budget, and ensuring that project utilisation is met or exceeded
  • To identify and follow up business opportunities with existing and new clients in liaison with Partners, managing and contributing to proposals, and undertaking face to face meetings with clients
  • To support the management and development of the team – managing and supervising activities and providing coaching and guidance to more junior members of the team

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Regular travel to other South African offices and opportunities for overseas travel
  • Good knowledge of sustainability and ideally a relevant degree
  • Expert knowledge in the key areas of sustainability, including social, environmental and economic issues
  • Understanding of business processes e.g. strategy, reporting, assurance
  • Good knowledge of key legislation and standards including ISO 140001, OHSAS 180001, SA8000, AA1000AS, ISAE 3000, UN Global Compact and GRI 3
  • Excellent relationship building skills, with strong influencing and collaborative working skills
  • Entrepreneurial thinking with the ability to identify opportunities to extend own practice and look for ways to grow the business and leverage opportunities
  • Excellent communication skills in English – including oral, written and presentation skills
  • Ability to confidently interact with FTSE350 clients at all levels of the organisation – from senior management to operations
  • Understanding of sustainability in a business context
  • Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills – with the ability to manipulate, analyse and interpret data
  • The ability to review and recommend management systems and performance in relation to sustainability

EXPERIENCE

  • Solid experience of advising on sustainability issues, ideally within a consultancy setting
  • The ability to identify the bottom line impact of sustainability issues
  • Experience of assurance of sustainability performance, against current market standards including AA1000AS and ISAE3000
  • Proven and impressive sales track record
  • Experience of managing complex projects
  • Coaching and developing staff
