Stream Restoration Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY

The Stream Restoration Specialist will report directly to the Technical Services Manager and will be responsible for assessing, surveying, conceptualizing and designing stream projects to provide water quality, habitat and sustainability upgrades to watershed projects on private and public lands. This position is a critical element of the work TU accomplishes in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands and this position interacts with biologists, watershed scientists, engineers, and fishery biologists to find the best alternative to allow native trout to flourish. The position has technical aspects which require interaction with agency engineering staffs.  The position will be based in the Mid-Atlantic in the watersheds of the Shenandoah, James, Potomac, and Greenbrier.  Duty locations in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland will be considered.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct stream geomorphic surveys (dimension, pattern, profile, substrate), and stream habitat assessments, as well as aquatic organism passage assessments for design and monitoring purposes;
• Prepare geomorphologic, hydrologic and hydraulic models and design calculations;
• Prepare construction drawings, details, specifications, and as-built drawings with minimal oversight;
• Design and oversee the construction of habitat improvement, bank stabilization and aquatic organism passage projects using natural stream design and stream simulation methods;
• Coordinate contractors or TU’s staff to implement projects in a timely and cost-effective manner;
• Prepare budget and cost estimates for planning, design, and construction; and
• Implement multiple restoration projects simultaneously.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the highest ratings will have the following qualifications:

• Bachelors of Science degree in fisheries management, geomorphology, civil engineering or similar technical degree with a focus on water resources, hydrology, or hydraulics;
• Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced technical degree and/or at least 2 years of full-time work experience in the planning, design, and construction of natural stream restoration projects;
• Completion of Wildland Hydrology’s River Short Courses Levels I-IV or equivalent stream design training;
• Experience with Stream Simulation procedures for designing aquatic organism passage projects at road stream crossings;
• Experience developing geomorphic, hydrologic and hydraulic models related to streams and floodplains;
• Ability to plan, design, and manage stream restoration projects from conception to construction;
• Ability to interact and work with a diverse group of stakeholders including farmers, biologists, engineers, landowners, and state and federal agencies; 
• Experience with ESRI GIS, HEC-RAS, Excel, Rivermorph, and AutoCAD software is preferred;
• Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
