  • Mission of the Initiative:  

Over the past 30 years of reform and opening to the outside world, China has become one of the largest economies on earth and the way it develops will significantly shape the future of the global economy.

The China for a Global Shift Network Initiative (NI) strives to work with China and its partner countries to develop approaches for economic development and an increased quality of life can be achieved within the ecological limits of one planet, while allowing space for developing countries to grow.

 

The China for a Global Shift Initiative strategy is articulated around four key objectives:

  1. Promoting a footprint policy framework in China
  2. Supporting sustainable finance
  3. Driving responsible trade
  4. Mainstreaming innovative products and services

 

The Strategy Director will be responsible for ensuring integrated approaches within the strategy team as well as coordination with relevant Initiative network partners in the enabling team and implementation teams outside China. This position requires an experienced policy strategist with international experience in sustainable development and sustainability related issues, who can provide strategic leadership and management for the Initiative.  Strong interpersonal, team coordination, virtual team management, and social skills are essential, as the position entails extensive coordination within the WWF network, management of projects and staff and external partners and the ability to foster and maintain partnerships. Experience in programme development, execution and management are necessary. Extensive international experience and perspectives are crucial.

 

  • Major Functions:
    • Coordinate the Initiative’s objective teams and their workplans on footprint, trade, finance and innovation so as to support the NI Leader for high level delivery of the Initiative’s overall strategy goal.
    • Facilitates the Initiative’s engagement and delivery in priority regions of the world for the Initiative’s projects, partnerships and policy activities especially in Africa, the US, Europe and South East Asia
    • Creates synergies with other WWF programs and initiatives, working closely with other WWF staff on policy, trade and investment between China and the world, and integrating this work in the WWF China conservation team.
    • Maintains strategic oversight of policy analysis and communications of the Initiative’s objectives
    • Supports the NI Leader to ensure effective WWF representation for the Initiative in high-level policy dialogue in and outside China especially with non WWF partners.
    • Ensures effective engagement and relationship management with relevant donors to ensure strategic objectives are financed as well as delivering effectively on funded programmes
    • Line-manages strategy objective staff managers and consultants necessary for delivery of the Initiative’s primary objectives.

 

  • Profile:

Required Qualifications         

  • An advanced degree in a relevant discipline
  • At least 10 years professional experience in policy such as the fields of economics, international relations, sustainable development, or environmental sciences.
  • International, forward thinking and strategic in approach
  • Proven experience in strategic policy work, analysis and communications
  • Proven experience of high level engagement with stakeholders from the public and private sector
  • Demonstrated success in managing teams and budgets
  • Good understanding of environment and sustainable development issues and national politics within China and how it relates to other regions in the world
  • Deep knowledge of WWF Network a great asset

 

Required Skills  

  • Excellent policy analysis ability and broad knowledge of relevant policy issues
  • Outstanding leadership, management and communication skills
  • Proven ability to open doors and build relationships of confidence with senior contacts in government, business, civil society and the donor community
  • Dynamic, creative and outgoing personality and commitment to nature conservation
  • Strong coordination and team work experience
  • Ability to work in a multicultural organization and visual team engagement
  • Excellent English writing and speaking skills (Chinese language skills are a strong advantage)
