Description

About the European Climate Foundation

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

About the role

Join us if you want to be part of the renewable revolution. We are looking for someone with solid knowledge of renewable energy, the ability to transform that knowledge into compelling story telling, and the skillset to make it see daylight in top tier media.

The role is based in Southeast Asia, but has a broader global remit.

You will create media stories about the impacts of renewables and the urgency for our world to transition to a clean, sustainable, secure, and prosperous energy future. You’ll be part of an exciting global network of communications professionals responding effectively to energy-related events, and delivering advice and support to partners.

ECF’s strategic communications team is the outreach unit of the foundation. Its role is to act as a center of expertise for communication on climate change and to play an active role in helping create more political, media and public endorsement for action on climate change at an international, national and sectoral level.

Key responsibilities

As the Renewables Associate, Strategic Communications, you will be responsible for:

  • Working with the Global Renewables Lead to develop story packages and communicate the complex, technical and fast evolving energy stories to non-specialists
  • Keeping a watching brief on key issues in the media, working with the Renewables Lead and other colleagues on regular updates on energy to help inform colleagues and peers in the community
  • Supporting the Renewables Lead and other colleagues in efforts to develop spokespeople who can talk to the energy transition work
  • Undertaking proactive media work on an ad hoc basis supported by, or alongside the Renewables Lead
  • Some project management with key partners and internally (including some financial and administrative tasks)
  • Close work with digital media colleagues, to identify and create social/digital storytelling and outreach opportunities

Experience and competencies

  • 3-5 years of demonstrated understanding and professional experience of communications in the renewable energy community, gained either as a communications professional or environment journalist
  • Knowledge and experience of the energy sector and media landscape
  • Calm familiarity with the full range of tasks and processes found within a busy, modern press office or external communications role
  • Ability to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders, including experts, journalists and civil society
  • Outstanding English language skills, with a track record of producing engaging and impactful communications materials
  • Excellent knowledge of digital platforms and social media, and awareness of their use in strategic communications interventions, with demonstrated experience of producing stories for legacy and digital media and / or briefing colleagues and consultants to carry out this work
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers
  • The strong multidisciplinary skillset necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work nimbly across phone/video conferencing, timezones, slack, email, Trello, etc
  • A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change

Desirable:

  • Contacts with relevant journalists, climate scientists and organisations working on climate change
  • Additional language skills
