Project Description

The Energy Modernization Project is new initiative that aims to secure decarbonization policies to advance clean energy technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. The project's work will center on policies that accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, deploy offshore wind energy production, and modernize electricity grids to increase their capacity to deploy new renewable energy resources.

Position Overview

The officer will serve as a lead campaigner on state decarbonization advocacy initiatives aimed at supporting adoption of electric transportation, deployment of offshore wind energy, and transitioning to a clean grid. Reporting to the senior manager, the officer will collaborate with project leadership to develop strategies and implement state legislative, regulatory, and administrative campaigns. The officer works closely with colleagues to manage initiatives across multiple target states, represents the project to key external decision makers and stakeholder groups, and oversees external contractors and grantees to meet programmatic objectives. The officer will also play a lead role in working closely with communications colleagues to develop content for the website and other external communications materials.

This position can be located in Pew's Washington, DC, office , and would be eligible for up to 60% telework. With frequent travel to Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, the position could be located in a home office within the U.S. southern region for 100% telework.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a work environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible and in line with Pew and the project's related goals.
  • Implement legislative, regulatory, and/or administrative campaigns across multiple target states to advance programmatic policy objectives; identify potential partners, supervise external consultants, develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners and stakeholders, and ensure grantees meet deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with Pew staff including communications, conservation science, government relations, and field operations to execute and ensure coordination of campaign activities.
  • Develop and maintain broad substantive knowledge of power and transportation decarbonization policies to inform and advance program priorities; establish Pew as a trusted resource and partner to allies, and key state administrative, utility commission, and legislative staff and officials.
  • Monitor key activities of state governments, public utility commissions, trade associations and utilities, advocacy groups, and others that relate to power and transportation decarbonization.
  • Write web analysis briefs, fact sheets, presentations, earned media, and other written and visual products for education and advocacy efforts, ensuring factual accuracy.
  • Represent Pew in key government meetings, coalition meetings, conferences, hearings and testimony, public events, and with local media.
Requirements
  • Skilled at informing and influencing internal and external audiences through written and oral communications.
  • Possesses knowledge of offshore wind, transportation electrification, and/or clean energy sectors.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Aptitude to apply a non-partisan, evidence-based approach to projects and campaigns that require support across the political spectrum.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent additional work experience in lieu.
  • Eight years of applicable experience, including experience working on public policy advocacy or electoral campaigns.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices to Pew.

  • Develops and moves projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  • Naturally develops and manages productive and collaborative relationships with staff and contractors.
  • Experience with federal policy or state policy institutions desired; familiarity with legislative analysis and/or drafting preferred.
  • Comfortable managing and meeting multiple deadlines and balancing short- and long-term goals.

Travel

This position requires domestic travel to meetings and conferences, including up to 35% of time during key periods
