World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Sr. Program Officer (SPO), for its Arctic Field office in Alaska to develop and implement strategic outreach within the business community to build a case for marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management in Alaska’s oceans. The SPO will support WWF technical experts in finding common ground between WWF and the private sector with respect to the use of science, planning, and precautionary management. S/He will develop and deploy a coalition of individual business leaders in Alaska to promote good faith participation by the State in coastal and marine spatial planning (CMSP) as outlined in Executive Order 13547 and the Final Recommendations of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force. The SPO will communicate with Alaska businesses, policy leaders, and Native leaders to develop and advocate ways forward to achieve conservation and subsistence results through CMSP. As a core member of the Alaska team, the SPO will interact with partners and WWF counterparts in Canada and other parts of the Arctic.
Master’s degree, preferably in business, political science, or interdisciplinary background including natural resources management is required. A minimum of 5 years experience in political outreach and advocacy, coalition building and deployment, and/or business engagement and knowledge of Alaska’s economy, political system, and cultures is also required. Experience in analysing complicated and sensitive industry/environmental issues, and in identifying and evaluating possible stakeholder and government responses to those issues is a must. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, flexibility, a solution-oriented approach and the ability to work both independently and with dispersed is critical. An established network of contacts in AK and Arctic private sector is a plus.
