Description

Experience the wildlife and culture of a magnificent part of the world: Drake Bay on Osa Peninsula that stretches out into the Pacific ocean.

Our volunteer program plays an important role in the research and conservation of a local sub species of Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris centroamericana), documenting and monitoring their behaviour and collecting location details of every sighting. These observations play a vital part in an on-going campaign to highlight the dangers these sentient beings face on a daily basis, and can help to raise their endangered status.

We act as guardians when these dolphins are netted by the fishing industry and our presence as witnesses is needed to ensure no dolphins are killed. At the same time we collect evidence of illegal foreign fishing fleet activity.

As a volunteer, you will also take part in programs onshore to highlight the importance of protecting the local marine wildlife and introduce ways that both safeguard the ecosystem and help local communities secure their livelihood. Such projects include the construction of artificial reef builders out of concrete and steel. These structures not only help the coral grow, they also assist in replenishing fish stocks.

  • Carry out daily observation and monitoring of behaviour and locations of a local subspecies and super pod of spinner dolphins. These observations contribute to an on-going project that will ultimately help to raise their endangered status. We also act as a guardian when these dolphins are netted by the fishing industry and our presence as witnesses can save their lives.
  • Assist in the collection of evidence of illegal foreign fishing fleet activity.
  • • Develop awareness programs and tools to highlight the importance of protecting the local marine wildlife, and introduce ways of protecting wildlife that also secures the local community’s livelihoods, particularly through the construction of artificial reef builders made out of concrete and steel. These structures not only help the coral grow, they also assist in replenishing fish stocks.
  • Work on specific development projects requested by the local community, including helping out in the local organic garden, and learning about environmentally friendly building techniques that can be applied anywhere in the world.
  • Provide educational assistance to children in local schools. This may also include building and construction of school buildings according to their needs.
  • Some work may include working with Corcavado Foundation local turtle conservation organization to help protect this iconic species. However during the months of Jan, Feb and Mar the turtles are not very active so any work may only involve general awareness. The priority at this time is the spinner dolphins.
