This position will be based in Nairobi, on a renewable three-year term contract and will report to the Nairobi-based Director of the Soil Health Program (SHP).
Key responsibilities will include identifying opportunities for grant making and grant supervision in the area of research, adaptation, and extension of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) technologies; identifying complementary grants for capital equipments; identifying opportunities to improve the networking of soil scientists, agronomists and other researchers engaged in the ISFM technologies across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA); liaising with SHP and other AGRA colleagues, representatives and experts from other agricultural development organizations to complement and enhance the ISFM technology package extension activities and operational effectiveness of planned or existing grants; carrying out rapid market assessments to ascertain the need for and potential impact of a Soil Health Extension Program investment; assessing the requirements for co-funding from other AGRA programs, donors or the private sector; responding to grant requests from other projects and programs; initiating the contracting of grantees and the transfer of monies; and on-going supervisory oversight, monitoring and evaluation of awarded grants.
Applicants to this position should have an MSc or PhD degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Agricultural extension, Rural Development or equivalent. They should also have a minimum of 10 years successful experience in agricultural research and extension, five of which should have been working on issues pertaining to African rural development. In addition, they should have demonstrated ability in creating strong research and extension linkages and putting in place operational mechanisms to bring agricultural and particularly ISFM options to scale.
