The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

The Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Tourism division works to help tourism entrepreneurs conserve their environments and contribute to local livelihoods while improving their own financial health. We do this by offering training and technical assistance, including workshops and seminars, providing tools and resources that provide step-by-step instructions on implementing best practices on the ground and promoting achievements of responsible businesses through exposure at international events, in marketing materials, and on the Web. We also offer verification services of compliance with sustainability criteria to tourism businesses to help them improve their environmental and sociocultural practices and help them prepare for certification if they so desire. We actively support the efforts of the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and educate travelers to seek out certified or verified operations as a means to differentiate and legitimate eco-friendly operations from those that may be making misleading claims.
