Would you like to deliver sustainable travel projects and contribute to North Somerset’s objective of reaching net zero carbon by 2030? A fantastic opportunity to shape projects and policy within the Sustainable Travel & Road Safety Team is available for someone looking to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment. Work within the team is varied with schemes as diverse as walking and cycling infrastructure, electric vehicle charging provision, low traffic neighbourhoods, smarter choices campaigns, education, training and publicity, planning comments and business, schools and community engagement. You will help supervise and assist consultants and internal staff, write policy and funding bids, and manage projects to time and budget. You will need to have excellent communications skills, be able to mobilise varied professional expertise to client our priority schemes, write clear reports and be flexible and creative in their approach to work. You will also need to be skilled at joint working with other teams, partner organisations and with Councillors. This is a key time for North Somerset Council, having recently declared a climate emergency. Sustainable transport solutions are critical to how we will address carbon emissions. We require a skilled officer to help us develop our programme and deliver a range of creative sustainable transport options, including addressing suppressed demand for walking and cycling. Ideally you will have 5 years relevant work experience and a background in transport planning, project management, road safety and/or policy and bid writing. A degree in a relevant discipline such as business studies, geography, planning, engineering, or a subject directly transferable will be essential. A further post-graduate qualification is desirable as is membership of a relevant organisation such as RTPI or IHT. Extensive experience will also be considered for less relevant qualifications. The post will mainly be working from home initially, with a hybrid work style, with travel to Clevedon, Weston-Super-Mare, Bristol and other West of England offices. Site visits (sometimes remote) within North Somerset will also be required. This role is a permanent position with career grade increments and progression.
