Description
The South African National Botanical Institute (SANBI) is looking to appoint a highly motivated individual to provide technical support to the Biodiversity Assessment Directorate.  This includes research support through conducting literature reviews, conducting analyses and contributing to the development of research methodologies, the application of remote sensing technology in the marine environment, supporting marine ecosystem mapping and assessment through involvement in relevant SANBI fora, and supporting education and outreach activities.

Appointment requires at least a BSc (honours) degree in Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or Zoology.  This qualification must have at least 1 year work experience in a related field.

The incumbent must have knowledge of and experience in the application of remote sensing in the marine environment, and experience working with ocean colour data, working with high-resolution Sentinel imagery, proficiency in Geographic Information Systems and in using satellite processing software (eg. SNAP) as well as data inventory and management.

The incumbent must be able to write reports,  be skilled in scientific writing as well as have experience in MS Office, and have a code B/C1 driver’s license with at least one year driving experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide research support to the Marine Programme with a focus on fresh water inputs into the marine environment;
  • The extraction, collation, analysis, management and visualization of remote sensing data for the marine environment;
  • Support efforts to improve the national ecosystem map and assessment;
  • Provide support for human capital development, science and engagement .
