GL Garrad Hassan is the world's largest independent technical and engineering consultancy for renewable energy. We are the recognised global authority on onshore and offshore wind power and also serve the wave, tidal and solar sectors.

An opportunity exists in our Electrical Group for a Senior Project Manager - Market Analysis. The Senior Project Manager - Market Analysis position is based in our San Diego, CA North America office and / or with the option to work remotely.

The primary focus of this role is managing Market Analysis projects such as wind curtailment studies in support of due diligence services, wind integration studies, and custom consulting engagements.

The Senior Project Manager - Market Analysis, will be responsible for supporting the strong growth of GL GH Market Analysis consulting services in North America.  This position is responsible for a range of duties including supporting business development activities, assisting in staff development, and contributing to the strategic direction and growth of the Market Analysis practice area.  This position requires strong knowledge of the Ventyx PROMOD software model and associated tools used by GL GH to conduct market studies and knowledge of existing North American energy markets.  This engineer should possess strong communication and inter-personal skills and have experience interacting with clients in a leadership role.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

Oversight and performance of detailed market analysis studies including:

  •   Assessment of curtailment risk for wind projects under development;
  •   Assessment of congestion exposure and the need for hedging via FTR/CRR;
  •   Perform long-term studies to support financing and strategic decisions;
  •   Evaluate economic impacts of new transmission projects to satisfy FERC 890 requirements;
  •   Perform cost-benefit studies to support state and federal filings;
  •   Evaluate economic feasibility of proposed HVDC transmission lines to support commercial investment decisions
  •   Perform wind integration studies
  •   Quantify impacts of changes in market design and market participation
  •   Evaluate economic feasibility of new technologies, including energy storage

Lead consulting studies and have capabilities to review and perform all aspects of project management duties including:

  • Scope development and cost estimates;
  • Design study methodologies and scenarios;
  • Identify critical data needs and oversee data acquisition and construction;
  • Database and scenario management activities;
  • Lead technical discussions and project status calls with clients;
  • Manage project resources and activities to meet scheduled deadlines;
  • Manage project budget to achieve target profit margins;
  • Write detailed reports summarizing project methods, analysis, and findings;
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key clients to support business development;
  • Supervise and mentor Market Analysis staff assigned to projects; Coordinate and manage personnel and work provided from other GL
  • GH groups and subcontractors;
  • Prepare proposals including scope of service, schedule, budget, and documentation requirements;
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of the North American electric power system, including:
  •  Regulatory and reliability framework applicable to renewable energy development, interconnection and operations (FERC, NERC,   other);
  • Current and developing market structures and power purchase arrangements;
  • Current and developing Independent System Operator and Regional Transmission Organization protocols and their application to     renewable development;
  • Represent GL GH in relevant industry groups including Utility Wind Integration Group, IEEE, American Wind Energy Association and others to enhance GL GH reputation and maintain technical expertise;
  • Participate in ISO/RTO working groups to establish and maintain regional expertise; and
  • Contribute to the strategic development and growth of the Market Analysis practice area.

The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing multiple projects.  The position will be responsible for communicating and resolving technical issues with Clients, and traveling to projects in all parts of the country to perform project duties and present study findings.  The position is responsible for addressing concerns and issues of the Client related to the project, placing a premium on the Client's time.  The position is required to thoroughly understand a broad range of power systems engineering including generation, transmission, Locational Marginal Price market concepts, market operations, security constrained unit commitment and dispatch, and renewable energy technologies and issues.  The position requires familiarity with power systems analysis including power flow tools and detailed energy market economic simulation models and the ability to use and learn computer analysis software applications.
