Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace.
The ideal candidate will be one that is flexible, have the ability to form strong relationships with key stakeholders, analyse political trends and is well aware of local, regional and continental political environment. The candidate must also be committed to the type of work that Greenpeace does. Having an activist background or experience in the NGO sector will be an added advantage, as would the ability to speak more than one South African language. The successful candidate would report to the Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager, and must be able to perform these duties:
Advocate to political and civil society audiences the political aims of the Climate and Energy campaign, and to develop policy on specific issues relating to the campaign as and when the need arises.
To ensure coherence and synergies between the Climate and Energy campaign political and campaign strategies, as well as between those and the political strategies of the other areas of GPAf programme.
Develop scenarios and strategic political roadmaps for the campaign in support of the global strategies.
Be able to operate in fast-changing circumstances with the ability to quickly and effectively adjust plans to best deliver objectives.
Develop, maintain, and nurture extensive contacts and relationships with all relevant political bodies and NGOs in order to build effective networks and partnerships that promote our campaign and organisational objectives.
Prepare and/or, where appropriate, commission reports, substantive briefings, updates, and talking points with the campaign and communications teams to ensure the consistent external communication of issues.
Represent Greenpeace Africa in all forms of media, both proactively and reactively.
Maintain a general knowledge of recent and relevant environmental, social, legislative, and political developments in relevant areas, ensuring that Greenpeace Africa is able to respond effectively to new developments.
Manage budgets and ensure that there is no overspending.
Internally manage and track political research to be conducted across the issues and campaigns to decrease duplication and increase efficiency across the continent.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
University Degree in Political Science/International Relations/Social Sciences or other relevant field.
Minimum of five years proven expertise and knowledge in high level political negotiations in Africa.
Minimum of five years proven expertise in policy development in Africa.
Proven ability to conduct effective advocacy/lobbying.
Fluent in written and spoken English.
