Description

Primary Objective

Undertake research and analyses of national and international environmental policy issues and their potential impacts on the Northern Territory. Responsible for the implementation of environment protection and sustainability programs as set by Government priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Analyse complex national and international scientific and policy reports and discussion papers on environmental policy issues and provide high quality professional advice to Government.
  2. Preparation of reports, Cabinet submissions and Ministerials.
  3. Liaise with Government Agencies in the development of policy options for presentations to Cabinet and to achieve coordinated whole of Government responses on environmental policy.
  4. Represent the Territory on national environmental policy committees and working parties.
  5. Undertake specific projects and implementation of the NT Climate Change Strategy and the Territory 2030 Strategy.
  6. Contribute to NT Government policies and strategies.
  7. Research, review and contribute to various environmental legislation matters.

Selection criteria

Essential:

  1. Qualifications in environmental management/engineering/science/ environmental law/economics or a related field. 
  2. Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills with ability to review complex scientific and policy reports.
  3. Good organisational skills with proven ability to achieve objectives and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment.
  4. High level communication skills, verbal and written, with capability to report on complex environmental issues in a clear concise manner.
  5. Strong project management and negotiation skills.
  6. Ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with people of different cultures.

Desirable:

  1. Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of legislation and associated legal instruments.
  2. Working knowledge of environmental policies and positions of the Northern Territory Government, States and Territories and the Commonwealth or knowledge of industry and other jurisdictional practices in regards to environmental policy.
