Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

The Senior Policy Advisor will be based at the Zoological Society of London in Regent’s Park.  You will be one of four members of the ZSL Conservation Programmes Senior Management team and will report directly to the Conservation Programmes Director.  The post holder’s primarily responsibilities will be to identify and secure national and international government funding for the Society’s work in the areas of conservation and science, and to identify appropriate strategic directions in the policy arena. You will also oversee the Science to Government and Industry Unit, which includes the Conservation Policy and Business and Biodiversity programmes as well as the conservation initiatives of the Indicators & Assessments Unit.  

You will also be responsible for:

Programme Development and Oversight

  • Develop and oversee the Societies conservation policy strategy.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of the fundraising strategy for all ZSL conservation programmes with a focus on national, multilateral, bilateral government funds.
  • Assist in the strategic vision for the development of ZSL’s conservation strategy and assist in its implementation.
  • Provide strategic vision for conservation initiatives in the Science to Government and Industry Unit.

 Line-Managed Project Development and Oversight

  • Oversee and coordinate all conservation activities in the Science to Government and Industry Unit.

ZSL Internal

  • To assist all Conservation Programme Managers in identifying and accessing large scale government grants. 

External

  • To represent ZSL at relevant committees, conferences, international conventions and government meetings

Experience

  • You will have an in depth understanding of key policy issues associated with international environmental management – preferably in the area of wildlife conservation.
  • You will be entrepreneurial in outlook and able to demonstrate experience of fundraising both in theUKand with international organisations.
  • You will have experience of the NGO/international government interface and will have represented their previous organisation(s) at a senior level
  • You will have strong written and verbal communication skills.
