Description |
Stand.earth is seeking a passionate and experienced senior campaigner to develop and implement strategies to raise awareness and build power to stop the expansion of the oil and gas sector. In October 2018, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) described the terrifying impacts of even a 1.5°C rise in global temperatures, and warned the international community about the importance of limiting any further warming beyond this point. The authors of the IPCC report reminded us that a societal transformation of this scale “is possible within the laws of chemistry and physics,” but will require “unprecedented changes” before 2030. One of the clearest steps we need to take to avoid this impending disaster is to stop approving and building new fossil fuel projects now. Stand has a history of opposing oil and gas infrastructure that poses a threat to our climate, communities and coastline, going all the way back to our campaign against the Northern Gateway pipeline. Our work to reduce the threat that new fossil fuel extraction poses to the climate now stretches from the Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to the Sacred Headwaters of the Amazon. Today we see liquified natural gas and the associated massive potential increases in fracking in the province of British Columbia as an emerging threat to our collective ability to address the climate crisis. The person who fills this position will help lead the work to make sure BC meets its climate goals by limiting the expansion of this new threat. We encourage applicants to apply by October 24, 2020. This position is open until filled. The Position Reporting to the Canadian Oil and Gas Programs Director, this position is responsible for aiding in developing and implementing our Canadian oil and gas campaign strategy, supporting issue research, conducting government relations, communicating through traditional and digital channels with key audiences, coordinating with allies, and executing public actions. Successful candidates will demonstrate a background in climate and energy policy, public and government relations and a history of working in allyship with Indigenous Peoples. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and adjusted based on location, but will likely be within the range of $70,000.00 to 80,000.00 CAD. This role will be based in British Columbia with a preference for someone working in Vancouver, Canada, (working hours are 9am-5pm Pacific time). At least to start with, the role will be remote from the comfort of the candidate's own home. Once the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, we hope there will also be the option to work out of our Vancouver hub office. This position will work closely with the development and digital teams, and must have a strong interest and/or commitment to Stand.earth’s values. Key Responsibilities
