The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind. CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs staff across four sites; the headquarters is at Wallingford with further sites at Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster. About the role We’re looking for an enthusiastic and committed Senior Hydrologist to lead on a variety of exciting, high-impact projects within a dynamic, research-focused team based at our Wallingford site. The aim of the research is to better understand hydro-climatic variability at a range of timescales from seasonal to multi-decadal, including future impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Responsibilities of the role:
About you A PhD, or equivalent relevant experience. A background of conducting hydrological or climatological research and of applying it to climate impact assessments and/or seasonal forecasting and proven ability of the application, or development, of conceptual or physically-based models. Expert in a scientific programming language (e.g. R, Python or FORTRAN), excellent numeracy skills, including statistical analysis of hydrological or climatological data. Proven ability of writing proposals/grant applications and of winning external research funding and a track record of successfully delivering research projects on-time and within budget. Experience of team leadership and the ability to successfully manage and develop staff within the area of work. Excellent communication skills with different audiences, including senior managers, scientists and stakeholders. A willingness and ability to work overseas for short periods, typically up to a few weeks but occasionally up to a month may be required for the role.
