Johns Associates is an award-winning multidisciplinary environmental consultancy based in Bradford on Avon (near Bath).

As a CIEEM Registered Practice, we pride ourselves in providing high quality advice, surveys and reports alongside sustainable and creative solutions for our clients in the fields of ecology, landscape architecture, water, GIS, Environmental Impact Assessment, arboriculture, and countryside management. We work across a wide variety of sectors including housing, leisure, transport, utilities, renewable energy, local and national government, charities, conservation agencies and education and have a strong reputation for dealing with complex and challenging projects, providing the best outcomes for our clients, the environment, and local communities. Our ecologists work closely with our in-house team of landscape architects to provide design solutions that deliver wide-ranging benefits, maximising biodiversity net gain.

Due to our rapidly increasing workload, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably experienced Senior Ecologist to join our friendly and growing team. This is a permanent position, based at our offices in Bradford on Avon but with the flexibility of home-working available as part of our new Hybrid Working Policy. We are happy to consider full or part-time hours.

The requirements of the post are varied, and would typically involve the following:

  • Efficient management and delivery of ecology projects and the ecology requirement of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Coordination of field surveys and deliverables for a range of client projects.
  • Undertaking field surveys across a range of sites (including UK Habitat Classification surveys and Condition Assessments, and protected species surveys).
  • Production of high quality, robust written documents, including survey reports, PEAs, EcIAs, HRAs, Habitat Management Plans and ES Ecology Chapters for a range of development proposals (with support as necessary).
  • Developing mitigation strategies and advising clients on BNG opportunities/ requirements.
  • Acting as the day-to-day client contact.
  • Co-ordination of specialist sub-consultants as required.
  • Writing quotes/ tender proposals for relevant projects across a range of sectors.
  • Mentoring junior staff members in areas of expertise, both within the ecology team and across the company.

You will have:

  • A relevant degree(s) and appropriate membership of CIEEM.
  • At least 5 years relevant consultancy experience, with proven experience at the appropriate level in the following key areas:
    • Management of commercial projects to time and budget
    • Identifying and implementing solutions to issues as they arise
    • Production of robust PEAs, Ecological Impact Assessment reports (to CIEEM standards) and Ecology Chapters of Environmental Statements
    • Preparation of / assisting with the preparation of EPS licence applications
    • Strong botanical identification/ survey skills desirable (FISC Level 4)
    • Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the Defra Metric 4.0
    • NE/ NRW survey licence(s) an advantage
  • A thorough understanding of the UK planning system and supporting relevant UK and European legislation and policy.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
