Senior Associate, Global Tuna Conservation Campaign (International Advocacy/Campaigning)

The Environmental Portfolio at the Pew Charitable Trusts

For the past twenty-five years, Pew has been a major force in educating the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with close to 250 professionals working full-time at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity and the destruction of the marine environment.

Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of unspoiled wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia's Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Preserving these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and pristine landscapes for future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for sound solutions to the loss of biodiversity.

In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Since 2005, Pew's ocean conservation program has expanded around the world and has played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas. Our work is grounded in the best available science and our goal is to reverse the decline of ocean life ranging from sharks and tunas to penguins and whales, and the habitat on which they depend.

Position Overview

The senior associate will provide support to the global tuna conservation campaign. The position will report to the project director, global tuna conservation, and is based in Washington, D.C. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support

• Provide support to ensure effective implementation of campaign strategies and activities.
• Research and develop reports, policy briefs, and outreach materials that are highly relevant to policy deliberations and are easily understood by the public, media and policy makers.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with decision makers, officials, and scientists in governments and international organizations, as well as members of the global seafood industry and other stakeholders.
• Respond to general campaign inquiries.
• Represent The Pew Charitable Trusts and the campaign at meetings, multilateral forums, conferences, and seminars.
• Develop and maintain broad knowledge, as well as subject matter expertise, of the science, policies and politics of marine conservation, fisheries management, and specific highly migratory species conservation issues.
• Ensure all project work is carried out consistent with Pew policies, guidelines and protocols. Contribute to the high standards of Pew's work by maintaining commitment to accuracy and quality.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree is required. Graduate degree in public affairs, international policy, or environmental science preferred.
• A minimum of four years of directly related professional experience in international conservation, public policy, or political campaigns, with a particular focus on or familiarity with multilateral fisheries forums or international ocean policy preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
• Superior oral and written communications skills. Ability to write and edit precisely, with a strong focus on accuracy of detail for language and figures. Ability to synthesize material and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as the means to address it. Confidence in presenting one's own ideas and diplomatically persuading others, as appropriate.
• Strong diplomacy skills. Able to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and highly results-oriented.
• Knowledge or experience with tuna conservation, particularly within the western and central Pacific Ocean region, or longline and transshipment reform issues a plus.

Travel
This position is expected to include significant international travel of up to 20 percent (approximately 50 days a year) to meet campaign objectives. This travel will cross both weekends and weekdays in order to accommodate international scheduling.
