Communications
The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance the Pew brand. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to manage the Pew brand, ensure production of the highest quality work, and effectively steward Pew's resources.

Position Overview
This contractor position, based in Pew's London office, reports to the Manager, Communications and provides interim support for the implementation of a communications strategy for the Pew's international environment campaigns, including the development of public facing communications (printed materials, e-newsletters, blogs, social media content, and events) and media relations activities. The position requires excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities, and proven writing and editing abilities for print and online platforms, as well as experience working with networks of supporters, media relations, and senior staff support.

Duration

12 months to cover for a parental leave absence.

Payroll

Will work onsite at The Pew Charitable Trusts in London, but the selected candidate will be payrolled through a third-party staffing agency.

Responsibilities

General

  • Supports communications outreach and tactics detailed in Pew's Ending Overfishing in Northwestern Waters communications strategy.
  • Regularly inform project staff of media outreach and social media results.
  • Support local communication tactics in support of Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project and other international ocean conservation campaigns.
  • Contribute to the management of the Pew Europe Communications calendar.
  • Share updates in advance for the internal weekly update (WCR), and the Pew International Environment calendar.

 

Social Media Planning and Execution

  • Support the Pew_EU twitter channel and Pew_EU Facebook page, help implement a social media plan for the Ending Overfishing team, create and edit tweets, develop digital materials and other engaging content.
  • Performs day-to-day moderation and posting on Pew EU social media channel in English.
  • Work with other environment communication embeds to identify and post other related digital content from their related campaigns.
  • Uses social media listening tools and analytics to report to management, track activity and translate these into strategic planning.

 

Media, Public Engagement and Communications Strategy

  • Develops and cultivates relationships with a comprehensive list of journalists, editors, producers and thought leaders in various EU countries, especially UK, Ireland, Belgium/European Commission.
  • Develop media quotes and instant responses as required.
  • Pitches and arranges media interviews in multi-lingual platforms for spokespeople and helps with preparation for interviews and public appearances and development of reactive statements.
  • Responds to media inquiries and is available for communications tasks outside working hours on a reasonable basis to support international staff.

 

Coordination

  • Coordinates activities with colleagues based globally and with the colleagues of other organizations with whom we are working.
  • Provides communications coordination support to campaign staff across Europe, including drafting and reviewing. communications strategies, plans materials and handling clearance and approvals as required.
  • Maintains regular reporting systems to keep Pew colleagues in all offices updated on project developments and potential communications challenges.

 

Publications, Writing, Online & Multi-Media Communications

  • Writes and edits communications materials in required languages in collaboration with the campaign team and Pew's editorial services desk, such as press releases, advisories, statements, speeches, presentations, fact sheets, web stories, newsletters, brochures and other communications materials for public dissemination.
  • Works in collaboration with digital, multi-media, and graphic design colleagues to develop infographics, videos, and other materials that help to achieve project goals.
  • Coordinates closely with the Digital and Creative team on the development of digital material and social media content.



Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience required in media relations and campaign communications, preferably with public policy or nonprofit advocacy organizations.
  • Significant experience in earned media, with understanding of media operations and news organizations and experience pitching both event-based press materials (announcements, bills, agreements, etc.) and product-based press materials (statements, reports, polls, etc.). Understanding of traditional and social media with a keen sense of how to adapt to changes in the landscape.
  • Proficiency in French (speaking and writing) is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience creating and maintaining media lists.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Good project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated political skills and judgment.
  • Ability to thrive in a creative, fast-paced and highly professional corporate culture that emphasizes excellence, collegiality, and teamwork.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and oral communications skills, including ability to synthesize material, focus on the essence of an issue or research findings and then communicate it to a broader audience in a captivating manner.
  • Experience working with a network of supporters.
  • European media experience, including media placement.
  • Ability to work productively in a nonpartisan way with a wide array of different and culturally diverse people.
  • Ability to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with agreed strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Sound judgment, ability to make decisions, and be responsive, clear and sensitive with colleagues and partners.
