Description

RSK Biocensus, part of the RSK Group, are looking for a Desk Based Ecologist (Senior or above) to join the team, to focus on improving the quality of tenders and other written output. We are happy to discuss with candidates a flexible working pattern, full or part-time hours and the ability to work from home and are offering this as a permanent contract.

In this role, you will work mainly with the Central Services  Team  (CST) to provide ecological advice across all stages of the tendering process. This will include interpretation of clients’ initial requests, advising the bid / no bid decision, producing technical content and costings for tenders and quotes and reviewing content produced by others. Bid production at RSK Biocensus is very much a team effort, so you will also be supporting (and supported by) other ecologists as they work on tenders, providing advice and mentoring where needed across the business. You will work closely with the two principal ecologists who also sit within the CST to ensure that all written output to clients, including technical reports, is to a very high standard.

You will be involved in wide ranging work across renewable energy, rail, highways, water infrastructure, housing and much more. CST is a friendly and hard-working team with a strong team ethos; we successfully navigate the challenges of home-based and hybrid working and are supported both by our senior management team and our dedicated project teams.

Main Responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively with the bid management team and the wider RSK Biocensus business to ensure that tenders produced are of high quality in terms of technical content and viability and are commercially appropriate.
  • Gaining a good understanding of the ecological implications of more complex invitations to tender (including estimating their likely commercial value to the business based on your experience),and being able to discuss this with colleagues as part of the bid / no bid decision process.
  • Talking to clients about their requirements to ensure that the tenders produced support these and are an accurate depiction of what is actually needed for their projects, building a working relationship from the earliest stage of involvement.
  • Writing ecology content for tenders and supporting others to produce their content to a high standard, through mentoring, collaboration and supportive reviewing of the work.
  • Supporting with the provision of training and advice to ecologists less experienced in bid production, both on an individual basis and as part of a wider training  programme.
  • Identifying and recommending improvements to the ecological aspects of tender and report production, for example by contributing to templates or identifying exemplary texts for use as model responses.
  • Providing reviewing support for other technical documents, as part of the ethos of continuous improvement, working with colleagues across all levels of experience from across the business.

Person Specification

  • An experienced ecologist who can produce written technical output to the standard expected of a Senior or Principal Consultant.
  • Experience of tender production both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • An excellent communicator who can impart technical and practical knowledge to others less experienced than themselves.
  • Adept at communicating with clients to manage their expectations and establish rapport.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people at all levels of the business, inside and outside of the immediate team.
  • Ability to evaluate client requests and summarise what ecology consultancy will be needed to a non-technical audience.
  • BSc Degree in Ecology or similar vocational qualification / experience

Salary and Benefits

  • £32,000 - £56,000 DOE
  • Company paid life assurance
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Discounted Gym Memberships
  • Regular career training and development
  • A flexible benefits programme including the option to buy additional holidays, health cash plan and electric car scheme
  • Access to GPs, mental health support and professional financial advice
