Natural England, the Government’s adviser for the natural environment in England, is looking for Seasonal Visitor Wardens to work at several of its National Nature Reserve (NNR) properties across England. The role will facilitate a positive welcome and experience for our visitors, encouraging responsible use of our most important sites for nature.
Natural England has 12 area teams across England. Area teams deliver advice, incentives and regulation; they deliver locally across the breadth of our work, with customers, partners and other stakeholders, to make a significant contribution to outcomes for the natural environment. Our Area Teams also manage 140 National Nature Reserves across the country, attracting approximately 4 million visitors each year. This is a local role, based in the East Midlands. Working as part of the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe National Nature Reserve (NNR) site management team, you will be expected to be flexible, working largely outdoors, on-site, working from our office / reserve base at Sea View Lane, Saltfleetby St Clements on the lovely Lincolnshire coast. The role may also require working on other NNRs across the local reserve group. Job description Your work will include: Welcoming visitors to our reserves and encouraging them to follow the Countryside Code 2021. Helping visitors to the National Nature Reserve to learn more about the wildlife and history of the reserve. Undertake visitor surveys, accessibility audits and wildlife monitoring as required. At busy times, help manage flow of visitors around the reserve to assist with social distancing. Report and record anti-social and illegal activities (e.g. arson, fly tipping, reckless cycling, motorcycling, vandalism). You are not expected to tackle these issues directly. You will: Have a passion for nature and NNR. A basic knowledge of access legislation and the Wildlife and Countryside Act would be desirable. Be willing and able to work outside, engaging with site users for much of your working day. This may involve negotiating uneven terrain, slopes and gates/stiles in changeable weather. Be prepared to work flexibly and undertake some early morning and evening work, weekend work and Bank Holidays. Have excellent attendance and timekeeping. Be able to listen and communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences, ensuring your language and communications are inclusive for all visitors. Have a desire to learn more about the reserve, its special features, visitor and access management, public engagement and partnership working. Be able to arrange and support events that engage the public and encourage people to take positive actions for the natural environment. Be self-motivated, organised and enthusiastic and used to working without direct supervision, having a confident and innovative approach to developing ideas and projects. Qualifications A-level / GCSE or relevant work experience. Competence 3 Professional competency Putting people at the heart of the environment – (level: basic) • Understand the importance of people accessing and engaging with nature, and how to balance their needs with nature conservation objectives. • Take practical steps to enhance opportunities for people to access, engage with, enjoy and take action for the environment. Competence 4 Professional competency Technical knowledge of public engagement • Experience in inspiring people of all ages to engage with and learn to protect the natural environment. • Knowledge of wildlife and nature conservation, and the pressures on local sites from recreational use.
