Ducks Unlimited’s Great Plains Regional Office seeks two highly motivated individuals to work as part of our team as range technicians to participate in land management and research activities to be conducted on DU-owned grasslands in north-central South Dakota near Leola. Positions will be for approximately 6.5 months beginning in early April through mid- to late October of 2009. However, one position could be negotiated to begin in early May through late October of 2009. Salary is $1800/month and housing is provided. Primary responsibilities will include identification and inventory of weedy plant species, exotic grasses, native grasses and forbes, habitat preparation for weed control, application of herbicide with ATV-mounted and tractor-mounted sprayers, fence installation and maintenance, vehicle maintenance, mowing fire breaks, participation in controlled grassland burns, prairie grouse lek counts, fall waterfowl banding, and potential for fall duck brood observations. Secondary responsibilities will include working with research crews on duck nest searching operations using ATVs, assisting with movement of cattle through a rotational grazing system and obtaining weights of these cattle, and various other duties as assigned. These positions require rigorous fieldwork under variable environmental conditions with long work days and some weekend work required. Hours expected to be worked for this position will range from 40-60 hours per week. Basic prescribed fire training may be required for this position and will be arranged by Ducks Unlimited accordingly. Successful applicants must be in excellent physical condition, including the ability to carry a 45 pound pack over 3 miles of level terrain in 45 minutes or less. All work is conducted in a remote, rural setting on the open prairies of South Dakota. Dedicated individuals with a strong work ethic, a desire to work in the outdoors, previous experience working on a cattle ranch, installing and maintaining barbed wire fence, and identifying prairie grasses and forbes are preferred. Experience with prescribed fire, reading aerial maps, using GPS units, operating ATVs, tractors, farm machinery, 4x4 vehicles, welders, and chainsaws is also beneficial. All applicants should have experience with data collection procedures, computer data entry, and possess good organizational and communication skills. Successful applicants will be expected to work as part of a team as well as independently. A valid driver’s license and clear driving record are required to qualify for this position.
