Description

Conservation International’s Indonesia Program in Indonesia is seeking an advisor position to join their marine program. Working closely with the CI Indonesia Executive Director and Marine Program Senior Advisor, the Seascape Management Advisor will play a critical role in the strategic planning for the future of the Indonesia Marine Program. CI’s Indonesia marine program works closely with governmental, NGO, and local community partners to encourage the development of networks of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at a scale across Indonesia that conserve biodiversity in a manner that also sustains fisheries, empowers communities, and ensures the growth of sustainable local livelihoods.  The marine program is primarily focused on the Bird’s Head Seascape initiative, in West Papua Indonesia, with complementary programs supporting the Bali and Anambas-Natuna MPA networks and a national-level MPA management capacity building initiative.

The Seascape Management Advisor will play a dynamic and wide-ranging role in both securing the long-term sustainability of the Bird's Head Seascape initiative, as well as developing new seascape and site-based initiatives within Indonesia. S/he will be responsible for providing broad technical support and management backstopping to CI Indonesia’s entire marine portfolio, including long-term conservation and strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, donor reporting, and providing scientific technical support to the MPA field teams. S/he will be responsible for building and actively maintaining relationships with a wide range of partners and stakeholders from international donors to local community members and will be involved in the technical development and implementation of MPA management plans and capacity building for local MPA field teams. The seascape advisor will also oversee the external grants program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Advisor:
  • Support the development and implementation of management plans for CI-facilitated MPAs.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship, technical support, and regular capacity building to MPA field teams.
  • Support long-term conservation planning and workplan development for CI-facilitated sites.
Program Management:
  • Support the long-term strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, and donor reporting for CI’s Indonesia marine program, including taking the lead role in donor reporting for the tri-institutional Bird’s Head Seascape Program, supporting the planning of the Coral Triangle Support Program (CTSP) Indonesia workplan, and capitalizing on any additional funding opportunities that arise
  • Ensure clear communication with key stakeholders both internal to CI and external through our institutional partners. This includes monthly reporting on program goals, needs and progress, responding to all programmatic inquiries and representing the program at internal and external meetings and workshops.
  • Build and maintain partnerships and ensure coordination of field activities with institutional partners.
  • Address any emerging management issues within the Marine Program.
Grants and Fiscal Management:
  • Provide budget management support to enable the field programs to operate efficiently.
  • Develop program budgets for new donors and projects and monitor expenditures.
  • Manage CI Indonesia Marine Program’s external grants and contracts, ensuring partners/consultants are supported in the development of proposals and supervised/evaluated in the implementation and successful reporting of their deliverables.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS: Though this position is based in the Bali Indonesia marine program office, it will require 25-50% travel (both to remote areas of Papua as well as Jakarta and other field sites in Indonesia and internationally). This position will require adaptability to remote conditions, moderate physical strength, and comfort with marine environments (including boats) for field based work responsibilities.
