SANCCOB seeks to employ a Seabird Rehabilitation Supervisor at SANCCOB Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape on a full-time basis. The Seabird Rehabilitation Supervisor will report to the Centre Manager and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects relating to seabirds undergoing rehabilitation and assist with facility management.

Key responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Daily supervision of all seabird rehabilitation activities, and to ensure all protocols and standards are maintained at the highest level and are according to SANCCOB’s standard operating procedures
  • Effective management of seabird rehabilitators
  • Volunteer and internship training
  • Daily care and treatment of various species of seabirds, of all ages, including after hours on-call duties
  • Ensure that the Gqeberha facility and staff maintain a state of preparedness and response for all seabird disasters
  • Stock management
  • Implementation and maintenance of a network of first responders along the Eastern Cape coastline
  • Daily maintenance of the facility, equipment, and water filtration systems
  • Provision of high-quality care of resident seabirds
  • Administration functions
  • Stakeholder liaison

Key competencies

The successful candidate must be able to lead a small team of rehabilitation staff, interns, and volunteers to provide a high level of care to seabirds undergoing rehabilitation.  The position requires physical fitness, with the ability to work in all weather conditions, involving rotational weekends and public holidays.   This position would suit a person who is dynamic, hardworking, and has a compassionate nature with a strong passion for seabirds. The ability to think out of the box and present solutions to challenges is an important attribute.  A clear understanding of SANCCOB’s mission to conserve wild populations of seabirds is essential.

Qualification and Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in Biological Science, wildlife or conservation preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a wildlife rehabilitation/seabird sector would be advantageous
  • Experience working according to standard operating procedures
  • Experience supervising a small team of people
  • Experience in writing reports, project proposals and articles will be advantageous
  • A valid driver’s licence and own transport essential
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office package)
  • Only open to South African ID holders
