Description

Environment:

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 34 States*.

ECMWF’s principal objectives are the development of numerical methods for medium-range, monthly and seasonal weather forecasting; the preparation, on a regular basis, of these weather forecasts for distribution to the meteorological services of the Member States; scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts; and the collection and storage of appropriate meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and surface. For details see:

ECMWF’s main computing facility includes supercomputers, archiving and data handling systems. ECMWF is connected to the meteorological telecommunication system and to its Member States via efficient networks linking 44 countries. A detailed description is available at:

This position is in the Reanalysis Section of the Research Department. The successful candidate will work in a team of nine scientists who work closely with other sections across the organisation to develop, produce and disseminate state-of-the-art global reanalysis datasets. These datasets support research in modelling and data assimilation and contribute to the evaluation and improvement of medium-range and seasonal forecast products. ECMWF’s reanalyses are made available to external users without restriction, for research, education, and commercial applications. Reanalysis is a highly rewarding, multi-disciplinary activity involving motivated people with a variety of scientific and technical skills.

ECMWF is leading two successive international research projects funded by the European Commission (ERA-CLIM and ERA-CLIM2), with the long-term objective to develop extended climate reanalyses of the coupled Earth system, including atmosphere, land surface, ocean, sea-ice and the carbon cycle. The ERA-CLIM projects involve collaboration with many institutions in Europe and elsewhere, including universities, climate centres and data providers.

Main duties:

ECMWF is looking for a scientist with deep knowledge of the global observing system, solid experience with complex and computationally demanding scientific codes, and a proven ability to work well in teams. The candidate will work with others in the Section on the preparation of input observations for climate reanalysis and on testing and improving the performance of the data assimilation system.

Qualifications:

PhD level or equivalent, with post-graduate experience in data assimilation and exploitation of meteorological and/or oceanic observations. Practical experience with scientific programming and development of complex codes and systems. Excellent communication skills and a flexible, pragmatic attitude towards teamwork.

The working languages of ECMWF are English, French, and German. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English. A good knowledge of one of the other working languages would be desirable. Interviews will be conducted in English.

ECMWF has an Equal Opportunities Policy and applications from all suitably qualified candidates are welcome.

Remuneration:

The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade and the annual basic salary will be £52,299 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-PL as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Full details of the Centre’s Staff Regulations, including salary scales and allowances, are available on the ECMWF website at:

www.ecmwf.int/about/basic/staff_consultants/staff_regulations/index.html

Staff are usually recruited from among nationals of the Member States and Co-operating States. However, applications from highly qualified candidates who come from other countries will be considered.

Starting date:
