The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognized reputation in ocean modelling. The MPI-M is currently developing a new ocean climate model. To strengthen these efforts we are looking for a

Scientist / Postdoc (SAS2010-09)

with a strong background in numerical modeling. Areas of expertise that are of particular relevance for this position are physical parametrizations of the ocean, or transport algorithms for 3D models on unstructured grids. The successful applicant will be part of a research team at MPI-M that develops a new ocean circulation model within the ICON project. ICON is a modeling initiative of the MPI-M, joint with the German Weather Service (DWD), for the development of a next generation climate model. 

A Ph.D. in mathematics, oceanography, physics, engineering or related areas is required for this position. The applicant must have a thorough proven experience with numerical modeling. Good programming skills (Fortran) are essential. The ability to conduct independent and collaborative research is mandatory. Good oral and written communication skills in English as demonstrated by publication record are required.
