Research Manager, Climate Diplomacy

E3G is looking for a Research Manager to join its growing climate diplomacy team. A recognised global leader in innovative diplomacy, E3G is increasing its capacity to respond to the challenge of deepening global climate cooperation at a time of increasing international tension and fragmentation. The role will be based in E3G’s London headquarters.

Overview of role

E3G is a European think tank working globally to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy. We build the broad-based coalitions necessary to deliver a safe climate. We pride ourselves on bringing independence to an extremely polarised discussion and holding policy makers to account on their promises. E3G was ranked the fifth most influential environmental think tank in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s ‘Go To Global Think Tank’ Index in 2016 and 2017.

A transformation to a global low carbon economy must happen by mid-century if we are to avoid dangerous climate change. The Climate Diplomacy Programme undertakes analysis, builds strategies and facilitates interventions which seek to increase ambition in global climate action. E3G’s climate diplomacy work extends well beyond the UN negotiating processes to include global cooperation on the energy transition, financial reform and increasing resilience. This requires deep understanding of the connections between the climate politics and other global agendas in foreign, security and economic policy.

This new Research Manager role will support the Climate Diplomacy Programme principally to work on strategies to promote the adoption of efficient, clean cooling around the world, as well as potentially supporting the work of other E3G programmes. This role is offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of further extension.

Key Responsibilities

• Tracking developments in efficient, clean cooling internationally and interpreting them in the context of E3G’s work;
• Delivery of political economy research, (principally) qualitative and quantitative analysis, to support E3G’s burgeoning work on efficient, clean cooling. Coordinating other researchers’ work in relation to this, working under the direction of the project manager who is based in the same office;
• Organising and participating in stakeholder discussions and workshops; managing relationships with stakeholders;
• Producing internal and external communications materials and undertaking short pieces of wider analysis;
• Travel will be required.

Person Description

You are an intellectually curious and highly motivated self-starter with a strong interest in the opportunities and challenges around developing low-carbon and resilient economies. You are a creative thinker, able to learn fast and to work flexibly with a range of people. You are prepared to go the extra mile to deliver high quality outputs to challenging deadlines.

You are comfortable with complex research projects and have excellent qualitative research skills. You are confident running analytical processes and managing ad hoc collaboration. The work you will undertake will make full use of your analytical, research and communication skills. You will be able to identify and engage with a range of external stakeholders to effectively communicate your ideas and findings to a varied audience.

Experience and skills

The successful candidate will:

• Have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities and a track record of significant achievements.
• Have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable).
• Have experience and a keen interest in working with real and political economy datasets as well as domestic and foreign policy.
• Have a track record of problem solving and research. You are able to quickly familiarise yourself with a new topic through self-led research including conversations with experts, assessing legislation or policy statements, and other data sources; including basic quantitative analysis.
• Be a strong team player, committed to achieving E3G’s objectives and capable of inspiring and facilitating action by others. You pay attention to detail and work effectively to support shared team outcomes.
• Have very strong written communication skills and impeccable English.
• Have strong strategic and political understanding and influencing skills. You prioritise achieving outcomes over running activities.
• Demonstrate a track-record managing relationships with external stakeholders, and have experience of working closely with or within developing countries.
• Demonstrate a high level of initiative and are positive, organised, stress-resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time.
• Is used to operating internationally, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity. A good working knowledge of at least one European Union language besides English, and/or Standard Chinese, would be an advantage.

A salary in the range of £37,000 to £42,000 based on qualifications and experience is offered.
