Description

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been founded by the Senckenberg
Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main, and additional
partners. It is funded by the German Federal State of Hesse through its Initiative for the
Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The mission of the Centre is to
carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate
change at the organism level. The Project Area D "Ecological Genomics" invites applications
for the position of a
Research fellow “Genetics and Adaptation of Arctic Vertebrates”
Project D1.3 [Ref. #D23]
The successful candidate should have a Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent in genetics,
evolutionary biology, molecular biology, molecular ecology or related fields and a strong
interest in molecular genetics. Experience in molecular laboratory techniques and DNA
sequence analysis, teamwork skills, curiosity in new techniques, and next generation
sequencing are an advantage. Furthermore, good written and oral communication skills in
English, the willingness to write research-funding proposals and to learn some German are
essential for a rewarding research. Working language will be English. The project is suitable for
an own PhD.
We are applying genomic techniques to questions of evolution, climate change and
biodiversity research. The focus of this position will be on the environmental influences and
evolutionary processes acting on the genomes of arctic vertebrates. Besides standard
molecular genetic techniques, you will use next-generation sequencing technology and
collaborate with a bioinformatician and population geneticist. Frankfurt is a highly attractive
city in beautiful surroundings, with a multicultural population, and many educational and
recreational opportunities.
Target start date is February 1, 2011. The position will be offered for 3 years. Salary and
benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50%).

The contract shall start as soon as possible and will be limited to three years. The duty station
