The position is based in region, at the Asia-Pacific Field Division (APFD) regional hub in North Queensland, Australia (Atherton / Cairns) and will meet the growing demands of high-level analysis for climate and ecosystem service projects developing within the APFD.  The successful candidate will collaborate with the Centre for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS) based in headquarters, Arlington US, to build analysis and modeling capacity throughout the field division.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to collect and analyze a range of satellite and airborne remote sensing data for monitoring terrestrial habitats.  The majority of effort will be on remote sensing for the support of REDD-related projects in compliance with currently proposed VCS/IPCC standards. The analyst will generate statistics and maps, train and support field staff and partner organizations in the use of remote sensing for mapping and monitoring vegetation, and land use change; and provide technical oversight and quality assurance in support of the production of remote sensing products.  Other occasional responsibilities may include GIS analysis supporting land use decision-making and spatial planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyze various types of remotely sensed data including vegetation and land use cover change, produce statistics related to habitat conversion and land use change, and model different scenarios to support spatial analysis and REDD related projects
  • Conduct training for various partner institutions in the Asia Pacific Division
  • Data acquisition and data/metadata management, providing technical oversight and quality control, and managing timelines and budgets.

Working Conditions:  Occasional field work in, and travel to, remote locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:
  • Masters in Remote Sensing or GIS, with a strong background in ecology, biogeography, biology or; advanced degree in these fields with a strong remote sensing background
  • Minimum 3 years experience in remote sensing interpretation
  • Familiarity with popular remote sensing analytical tools (e.g. Idrisi, ArcInfo)
  • Working knowledge of statistics
  • General positive attitude and problem-solving ability
  • Strong data management skills
  • Erdas Imagine or related remote sensing software packages
  • ArcGIS and ESRI scripting
  • Idrisi highly desired
  • GPS field data collection skills for validation of satellite observations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in training in cross-cultural environments would be an advantage
  • Experience in the Asia-Pacific region desirable
  • Familiarity with REDD policy and recommended methods for carbon baseline data collection  and monitoring.
