Regional Wildlife Biologist – Kentucky (November 2011)

Description: The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has an immediate opening for a full-time Regional Wildlife Biologist position in Kentucky. This position will serve as a cooperative biologist between the Kentucky Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Resources, the US Forest Service (Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area) and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). This position will be responsible for all facets of the NWTF's habitat conservation and wildlife management programs on both a National and State level.
Duties:
  • Identify and develop habitat enhancement projects, provide recommendations and plans for improving wildlife / turkey habitat on public and private lands with an emphasis on forest management and early successional habitat needs
  • Develop and implement Stewardship habitat proposals and projects with USFS staff that enhance wildlife habitat via forest and open lands management
  • Promote habitat and outreach accomplishments via NWTF and Agency public relations media
  • Administer NWTF's Regional habitat programs, and work closely with the KY State Chapter of NWTF to administer the Hunting Heritage Super Fund Program and accomplish the goals/objectives established within the North American Wild Turkey Plan
  • Develop and provide oversight of Agency contracts and agreements
  • Educate landowners through field days and workshops throughout the state
  • Garner funding for conservation work by securing grants and additional agency and non-governmental organization partnerships to further NWTF's mission
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Forestry, or science-related field and demonstrated knowledge of wildlife management and forestry with a minimum of three years of experience, or a Master's degree with at least one year of related experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills
  • Experience working with wildlife agencies, private landowners, grant writing / administration, Farm Bill programs, and southeastern ecosystems / management techniques are a plus
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft applications including spreadsheets, internet, computer programs / applications, and monitoring budgets
  • Individual will be required to reside in Central or Western Kentucky

Position will require moderate overnight travel, most of which will occur within Kentucky. Excellent health and retirement benefits package along with a vehicle plan. Salary is commensurate with experience.
