Global Marine 
Conservation International's Global Marine Division  is seeking a manager to oversee CI’s regional marine activities for our Coral Triangle Initiative and ensure the initiative contributes to priority marine conservation outcomes.   The Coral Triangle Initiative is a government partnership dedicated to promoting healthy oceans by helping people manage their marine resources through creating and strengthening Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), promoting Seascape management at a large scale, improving fisheries, adapting to climate change and recovering threatened species.  CI focuses on forging partnerships with governments, non-profits, academic institutions, the private sector and local communities in Southeast Asia and Melanesia, specifically engaged in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

 

Reporting to the Director of the CTI Program at CI-HQ in Arlington, Virginia, this position will be based within one of CI's local offices within the Coral Triangle region or in our Singapore office.  The Regional Manager will need to coordinate closely with CI's local marine programs in Philippines, Indonesia, Melanesia as well as CI Headquarters divisions. The Regional Manager must engage with CI's initiative NGO partners,  regional government officials, and with bilateral and multilateral funding agencies including USAID, the US State Department, AUSAID, GEF and ADB. This position will provide essential coordination between CI staff in the region and in headquarters, providing guidance to those staff on how they can best contribute to the initiative as well as guidance on CI's overall strategy for the Coral Triangle. 

As this position requires engagement at all levels,  the successful candiate must display significant judgement, discretion and negotiation skills in order to effectively establish and maintain relationships and associations. The position involves working with CI staff in multiple countries and across divisions at headquarters in order accomplish work objectives and therefore requires excellent interpersonal skills in order to motivate, and influence others to accomplish work objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Represent CI internally and externally on the Coral Triangle Initiative and ensure CI’s key messages are communicated to CI’s internal and external audiences.
  • Develop and maintain important relationships with IGO, NGO, government, and multilateral institution staff
  • Coordinate with CI staff in the region and in headquarters to implement CI's strategy for the CTI.  Serve as a coordinator for communications between staff in the region and in headquarters. 
  • Support CI staff in the regions and headquarters by providing technical information, assisting in proposal writing , USAID required reporting and other key tasks.

Working Conditions:  The position requires international and domestic travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international development, public policy, marine conservation, or an equivalent degree. 
  • Field experience from any of the six Coral Triangle countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste
  • Professional and academic experience in governmental environmental policy and international affairs, and knowledge and understanding of complex multilateral institutions.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and professionalism to engage and communicate with governments and other partners.
  • Ability to understand complex, technical issues concerning conservation science, international development policy, and the politics surrounding bilateral and multilateral institutions that are critical to CI’s success and ability to fund and implement conservation programs in the regions where we work.

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree (MA or MS) in international development, public policy, marine conservation, or an equivalent degree.
  • Proficiency in language from any of the six Coral Triangle countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste).
