The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is a global investor and advisor committed to promoting projects in its developing member countries that are economically beneficial, financially and commercially sound, and environmentally and socially sustainable.  IFC finances private sector investments, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides advisory services and advice to governments and businesses in the developing world.  The Environment and Social Development Department (CES) is responsible for ensuring that IFC s work is beneficial to human development and the natural environment through identifying environmental and social risks as well as opportunities arising from IFC s investments. CES aims to minimize risks of adverse impacts and maximize opportunities for positive development outcomes, ideally through early and ongoing engagement.  Environment / Social Specialists appraise potential IFC investment projects to identify risks; define steps required to ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards and Environmental, Health & Safety Guidelines; identify opportunities for value add in an investment project structure. They work with client companies, and mobilize technical and financial support for clients, to address environmental and/or social aspects of their operations. Environment / Social Specialists produce and disseminate good practices and lessons learned documents from IFC's work around the globe, and provide training on environmental and/or social issues to IFC borrowers.

Duties and Accountabilities:

Conduct environmental / social reviews of new projects in the oil and gas sector and in various other sectors, including mining, chemicals, infrastructure and general manufacturing,  
  • Supervise portfolio investments
  • Selection Criteria:

    Masters degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, engineering, or similar. 
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant professional experience – preferably working in private sector industries or consulting. In addition to environmental expertise, experience with social aspects particularly in extractive industry sectors a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; fluency in other languages (Bahasa Indonesia or Arabic in particular) a plus.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Highly motivated, committed to highest ethical standards.
  • Genuine commitment to sustainable development.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and geographic flexibility in terms of base. **Other** This is a two-year term appointment that may be converted to open-ended depending on continued business need and performance.
