Job Description

Looking for a great lifestyle in the heart of the North Island combined with a stimulating role? Do you have a passion for nature, conservation and the outdoors? Do you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, climbing and tramping in pristine environments?

 

The Ruapehu Area is seeking applications for someone that enjoys all of the above, a challenging career, is a team player and has the necessary experience to assist with the delivery of the following programmes:

 
  • Public Safety, including development and updating of emergency response plans regularly
  • Regular maintenance and testing of the Eruption Detection System (EDS) and surveying the public of their awareness of the system on the ski fields
  • Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation (RARO) liaison for the Department in the Ruapehu Area
  • Animal pests and weeds
  • Threatened flora and fauna species work.
 

To be successful in securing this position, applicants must have the following attributes:

 
  • An Avalanche 1 qualification and experience working in alpine conditions is essential (it is desirable for the applicant to also have the ability to train others in alpine conditions)
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of best practice for pest control and field delivery work with good bush navigation skills
  • River work experience and a high level of fitness
  • Experience in threatened species, and in flora and fauna monitoring
  • A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in science or natural heritage management is essential
  • Current First Aid Certificate (a certificate in Pre Hospital Emergency Care is desirable)
  • Experience with supervising staff and volunteers
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • A high standard of oral and written communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and meet deadlines
  • A full current driver’s licence
 

It would be an added advantage for applicants to have experience and knowledge of; GIS systems, an appropriate Controlled Substance Licence, Grow Safe Certificate, Motorcycle licence, ATV certificates and an understanding of Compliance and Law Enforcement.

 

You will be based at Whakapapa Village, Mt Ruapehu - the gateway to the beautiful and historic Tongariro National Park. We are a family friendly employer and accommodation may be available in the region.
