Job Description

The Maniapoto Area is looking for someone to assist with avifauna monitoring in the Waipapa Ecological Area, Pureora Forest Park. The position will be based at Pureora Field Centre for a term of seven months, starting late September 2008. The focus of the position is to assist with monitoring the productivity and survival of North Island Kaka in response to predator control operations. You will also assist with conducting population surveys of kaka and kereru using the distance sampling method and long-tailed bat transect surveys. Shared accommodation is available for rent at Pureora Village if required.

 

Applicants should be enthusiastic, motivated and capable. A tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in natural resource management or biological or ecological sciences is essential. Applicants must have a good understanding of New Zealand ecology and conservation and demonstrated experience in monitoring native bird populations. You must be physically fit and capable of working in a forest environment. You also need to have excellent organisational, record keeping and reporting skills, and a good working knowledge of common computer software. A current driver’s licence valid in New Zealand is essential. An outdoor first aid certificate and Roped Tree Climbing Certification (Level One) are desirable but not essential.
