As the Rainforest Volunteer Coordinator you will be responsible for helping the project leader to organize the volunteers during the programme. You will often be the first point of contact for participating volunteers. You will be expected to help on jungle trekking and research focused work as well as teaching. Key DutiesVolunteer Managementn Contact the volunteers at least 4 weeks before they arrive to confirm their arrival date and time and discuss suitable pick up arrangements and collect all passports for entrance permit application. n Follow a daily schedule of activities making adaptations as deemed necessary. n Arrange logistics and transport to meet programme needs. n Ensure ALL program introductions and safety briefings are given with all applicable forms signed and records kept. n Clearly explain programme objectives and expectations from volunteers. n Ensure ALL protocols and procedures are explained to volunteers prior to undertaking any activity. n Monitor volunteers throughout the program with attention to safety, morale and participation. n Facilitate volunteer meetings to gain feedback on the program and to identify key interest areas for long term stays. n Identify and utilize individual strengths amongst the volunteers and your colleagues. n Regularly review the program with your colleagues. n Ensure the general upkeep of the house and volunteer areas. n Ensure all equipment and camping gears are in working/usable condition. n Ensure supplies of first aid equipment are kept at the appropriate level. n Ensure the upkeep of equipment used by volunteers. n Daily updates of the facebook group. n Pictorial monthly reports. Forest Based Activitiesn You will co-lead volunteer groups with the rainforest leader or Batek guide to survey certain trails/area for poaching signs on the Taman Negara and Main Range sites along Sungai Yu Corridor. n You are responsible for guiding all new volunteers through the forest safety briefing; you will manage volunteers who most will have never been in a tropical rainforest before. n You are responsible for the safety of the volunteers at all times when in the forest, though you will be given training by the project leader and always have a local guide with you so you MUST ensure all suitable safety precautions are taken. n Organise and conduct weekly overnight camping sessions for the group with the Batek – Sat and Sunday. n Orgnanise and conduct weekly foraging activities with the Batek. n Organise weekly caving programme with SGI. Conservationn Help with the collection of GPS locations for all treks and point of interests. n Data recording and analysis as the project leader sees fit. n Help with identifying the location of snares and traps as well as poaching camps. n Provide details of snares and traps to the Wildlife crime line. n Identify and implement opportunities for sharing data. n Promote sustainable practices through projects and by sharing information. Community.n Help host foraging sessions with the Batek. n Lead the rubbish collect project at the Batek village – twice monthly collections – separate waste into recyclable materials and sell at recycle centre at Gua Musang. KEEP ALL THIN PLASTICS FOR THE PLASTIC BRICK PRESS n Helping to teach basic maths, science and language (English and Malaysian) to the Batek children and more advanced for the Malay kids Volunteer Accommodationn Ensure the volunteers keep the accommodation in a clean and tidy state. n Ensure bedding is changed on a weekly basis and that all new volunteers have clean bedding.
General Requirementsn Be a team player n High level of Rainforest safety awareness. n Ensure a good level of communication between yourself, Project Leader and colleagues at all times. n Undertake and demonstrate consistent planning of your workload and adhere to set deadlines. n Meet regularly with the Project Leader as the timetable of the project allows. n Assist the Project Leader in completing Risk Assessments, Operating Procedures and programme content as required. n Complete reports as required. n Provide cover for colleague’s leave and illness as required. n Ensure good financial management by detailing proposed and actual expenditure and filing receipts. n Travel for the purposes of work following agreed timetabling and budgets. n Provide adequate notice of any travel needed whether work related or personal. n Must display a professional example to volunteers and colleagues at all times. n Must adhere to all safety measures, protocols and procedures as directed by Ecoteer. n Must notify Project Leader of issues that affect the completion of set tasks. n You are expected to carry out daily house chores with the other staff on a rota basis. n Take on tasks in addition to the descriptions above as delegated by the Project Leader that are deemed fair, achievable within the present task load.
Personal Specification n Medium - high physical fitness. n Willing to learn new skills and ways of doing things. n Able to work under hot and humid conditions. n Excellent communication skills and confident public speaker. n Good forest ability and camping safety awareness. n High level of organization and ability to meet deadlines. n Knowledge of the work of Ecoteer and terrestrial conservation in Malaysia. n Able to motivate volunteers that are new to demanding environments and on occasion able to manage conflict. n Competent in using Microsoft Office. n A flexible and adaptive approach. n Must be comfortable in accessing assistance for a demanding role. n Completed first aid training. n Adventurous. Experience in outdoor activities preferred. n Independent and resourceful.
What you get out of it n Rotate with other interns to go caving with volunteers- 1 intern per group. n Share of communal food n IF YOU STAY LONGER than 6months we will provide a basic allowance of Rm250 per month for the 7th month. n Free mixed dorm accommodation at Merapoh. n 8 days off per month – provided as 1 day off per week and a block of 4 days off per month or 2 days off per week depending on work management at Project Leader’s discretion. n All work related expenses (NOT TRAVEL TO OR FROM MALAYSIA). n Free Wifi internet. n Written reference letter at request.
Start and End Dates Start ASAP.
We prefer longer durations and if you stay for the whole season we can offer an allowance after probation.
