The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.
Protected areas are internationally recognised as regions set aside primarily for nature and biodiversity conservation, but many are increasingly impacted by human demands for mineral resources. We are seeking a hard-working, capable and professional intern to assist with the Science to Government and Industry Unit (SGIU) at ZSL to help produce a report synthesising impacts and spatial overlap of extractives with protected areas, including case study examples and recommendations for policy-makers and companies. The position will entail compiling a review of the literature, carrying out more detailed case study research, planning and coordinating meetings, liaising with project partners and stakeholders, compiling policy and/or scientific papers and other related tasks as agreed.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
• At least an undergraduate degree in biology, conservation, environmental economics or a related subject
• Self-motivation, with the ability to carry out independent research and data analysis to meet deadlines
• Experience with statistical analyses with an ability to pick up new techniques as required
• High standard of written English and attention to detail
• Good interpersonal skills
• Familiarity with conservation policy and industry impacts on biodiversity (desirable)
The position will ideally be for a period of six months (up to 4 days a week), starting in September 2013. The role is based within ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park, London, so candidates should live within easy daily reach of ZSL London Zoo. All applicants must be able to show that they have permission to work in the UK. Please note that this is a voluntary position. However, ZSL will reimburse travel costs within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches.
To apply, please send a covering letter outlining your interest and suitability for the role, your CV and details of two referees to hr@zsl.org, with ‘Protected Area Impacts Internship’ in the subject title, by 8 September 2013.
