Description

The Zoological Society of London is seeking an intern to help develop the ZSL Projects Database (ZPD). The ZPD was created in 2009 to facilitate cross-society sharing of project information. It is designed to be used internally to provide ZSL staff with access to flexible, tailor-made information on the number, nature, location, species foci, activities, partners and funding for all ZSL conservation and science projects as well as to enable us to produce summary reports on our total funding for conservation, number of projects, species targeted, publication lists etc. The ZPD is currently in MS Access, but will be transitioned to a web-based version in 2012.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head of Regional Programmes and the Database Designer to plan and implement design improvements and new reporting systems on the ZPD, including the transfer of the ZPD from MS Access to a web-based system capable of password controlled access by staff around the world.
  • Assist all relevant staff to ensure that all project records in the database are complete and accurate, especially grant and other funding records.

 

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, have a good eye for detail and a strong interest in relational databases. Candidates should have a university background or equivalent in computer science, information technology or a related field.  Candidates from other fields will be considered if they can demonstrate that they have the required technical skills. Previous experience with MS Access is a must, and knowledge of VBA, SQL and/or LAMP would be an advantage.

 

ZSL is offering a professional environment and the opportunity to learn about developing databases for a large international conservation charity. The internship is ideally full time for six months with flexibility available and an expected start date in January 2012.  The role is based at ZSL’s offices in Regent’s Park,Londonand ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches (max £5/day).  Please note that there should be no expectation that any paid position will arise out of this internship.
