Description

Working with communities to evaluate, test and develop bushmeat alternatives, based in Equatorial Guinea

The tiny but disproportionately biodiverse country of Equatorial Guinea (EG) is undergoing an oil-fuelled economic boom, facilitating an unsustainable bushmeat trade which is threatening rural livelihoods and vulnerable wildlife populations.  Building on research conducted in EG since 2002, ZSL started an applied project in 2009 to provide an evidence-base, guide policy-makers, support implementation by communities, leverage long-term funding and act as a model for sustainable bushmeat management beyond EG.

We are seeking a passionate, hard-working and adaptable individual to manage this exciting project in Equatorial Guinea.  The post holder will report to the Programme Manager of ZSL’s Central, East and Southern Africa Conservation Programme in London and manage a team of ZSL and partner staff in-country.

Main responsibilities will include project management, logistics and administration, planning and supervision of research and fieldwork, building and maintaining relationships with project collaborators, stakeholders and donors, project development and fundraising, and external representation and promotion of ZSL and its conservation work.

The post holder should have a proven track record in conservation project management and/or a postgraduate or postdoctoral qualification in an appropriate subject such as conservation/ development policy, anthropology, environmental economics, conservation biology, or a related discipline. Experience with staff management and a good understanding of biodiversity conservation issues in Africa are essential. Experience working in the region and with socio-economic research and engaging with policy-makers and the private sector is highly desirable. Excellent written and spoken English, proficiency in Spanish (and ideally also French), strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills, and proven grant-writing and report-writing ability are also required.

The position will be based in Equatorial Guinea and will involve a significant proportion of time spent on fieldwork as well as occasional travel to neighbouring countries for policy meetings and project visits.  The position is a one-year extendable contract and is available from December.
