Description

Love Nature?  Enjoy working with young people?  Want to make a difference?

Salary: Circa £25,000

Following a successful National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, we have an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to lead our exciting new Preserving Surrey’s Hedgerow Heritage project.

This role will manage the delivery of a 4 year-long funded project to successfully engage over 2,400 people, with 3 key objectives:

  • Reconnect local communities with their hedgerow heritage
  • Create a new, younger and more diverse skill base to monitor and manage hedgerows
  • Protect 63km of existing hedgerows and create or restore 6.5km of additional hedgerows

About us

Surrey Wildlife Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working across the UK. With the invaluable support of volunteers and members we manage over 7000ha of land for wildlife and people in Surrey. We also work with other organisations and landowners to protect and connect wildlife sites across the county and inspire local communities and young people to care for wildlife where they live.

The role

As our Hedgerow Heritage Project Manager you’ll play a pivotal role in forging links with youth, corporate and community groups and inspire them to learn about hedgerows and their associated species.

Central to the role will be developing and delivering a range of activities that form part of the Hedgerow Heritage Activity Plan. This will involve working with schools to develop a ‘Hedge-ucation Pack’, delivering hedgelaying days, organising hedge events, and creating our innovative Hedgerow Tales programme exploring the rich history of hedgerows.  The role will support two consecutive 6 month internships, and devise hedgerow management plans to advise landowners on how to improve connectivity within the project area.

In addition to this, the role will work to build sustainable relationships and long-term people engagement that goes beyond the life of the project.

This role offers a great opportunity for someone with a balance of strong habitat management, people engagement and project management skills.

Who we’re looking for

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, proactive individual with experience of working with children and young people in an outdoor setting, along with practical experience of habitat management and a track record of delivering landscape based projects.

You will be a creative self-starter who can develop new activities and has the ability to reach and inspire parts of the community who have historically been less engaged in hedgerow management and the natural environment.

You’ll have strong stakeholder engagement skills to work in partnership with landowners, farmers and our partners in the project.

You will deliver a high standard of project management including reporting and documentation for our National Lottery Heritage Fund funders, budgets, marketing and commissioning consultants for the project.

This role involves travel across Surrey so a full UK driving licence is necessary.  There will be access to a Trust vehicle.

To apply, please send a completed application form, available on our website, to Andrew Jamieson, andrew.jamieson@surreywt.org.uk by 5pm Friday 21st February 2020.   Interviews will be held during w/c 24th February 2020
